    There was either rocks inside, or they used the heat of their hands to compact and harden the snowballs.

    Probably the latter, but possibly both techniques were used.

        Or take the hand hardened snow, roll it in powder, and claim ignorance.

        I know, there’s lots of variations on how make a snowball maim or cause blunt force trauma, but adding rocks and making ice balls in your hands seemed like a consise way to explain why those kids all look like boxers who lost a 10 round slug fest.

      when i was little, my brother skipped the packing the hard rock inside the snow bit and just threw the rocks at my head instead.
