Like Valve’s Proton compatibility layer for Steam Deck, Apple has made the Game Porting Toolkit to let Windows games run on macOS - so we tested it.
It sounds a bit rough now, but hopefully it means devs will be willing to make dedicated ports for it. And I think when we start getting more ARM Windows machines, and more games made to work on it, GPT will work better.
I mean, I sure hope so, but it seems unlikely to happen in the nearest future. Apple has been mostly ignoring Mac gaming for a long time.
This is the most effort they’ve done outside of the iOS ecosystem in decades.
Apple is usually slow to the party. They just wait for everyone else to try things first before giving it a try. Linux and Steamdeck’s translation layer has been doing this successfully for years.
Unfortunately GPT does come with some major caveats. The majority of DX12 titles that I tested using Whisky didn’t boot, or couldn’t make it past the introductory video files, and game performance is often shaky, clocking in at maybe half the speed of comparable Windows systems.
Doesn’t really sound like it.
Just tested it my M1 laptop. Works fine for my library so far. If I had more free time I would post a list of tested games. I don’t tend to buy the latest games on PC.
