I’ve not watched any part of this series as it looked geared towards children. Is it worth watching or better off skipping?

It’s geared to families but not children only.

It’s fantastic. Many fans will argue it’s the best of the current group of new shows.

It is intended for people with no experience of Star Trek though so it starts out feeling more like another franchise in the Pilot. By the 6th episode it’s unapologetically very Star Trek.

Agree. I’m disappointed I waited so long to indulge in Prodigy, but holy hell, when I did, it did not disappoint. Be aware the characters and dialogue are more kid friendly, but the voice acting is top notch (shutout to Kate Mulgrew and Jason Mantzoukas) and the plots are classically Trek: first contact, ethical dilemmas, holodecks gone awry. Cannot recommend enough

I actually preferred the early episodes when it felt… I wouldn’t say “less” Star Trek, but where the Star Trek tropes and settings weren’t so pronounced. I thought the pilot double-episode might even possibly have been the best pilot of the franchise - focused on character, and with the Federation (via tech like the universal translator) being a symbolic and literal way of different people coming together. I’m always interested in shows that push Star Trek beyond what’s familiar, but still true to its core, and Prodigy definitely falls into that group.

It is both geared towards children and quite enjoyable at any age.
