Its just meant to be absurd, I notice a lot of Lemmings digging for a deeper meaning that isn’t there. If that image+caption doesn’t make you grin immediately Farside may just not be your thing.
lolll don’t tell them! i enjoy the banter!
Honestly? Is it really “digging” to say this is related to the pandemic when a sneeze could kill other people.
Yes, it absolutely is digging. This comic was released way before COVID-19 was a thing. The most recent pandemic was probably Spanish Flu, which was before his time.
Ok, I read the title of the date meaning the release date.
It really isn’t digging though, it’s a pretty obvious interpretation.

It must be about a virus from 32 years after it was printed!
It’s literally titled with today’s date.
Digging would be to read the vertical copyright date of every cartoon, then looking at the cartoon.
I just posted my instant reaction.
Unfortunately this arms race eventually escalated to snot rockets.
This is top-tier The Far Side content. Everybody seems to remember the stuff with animals acting like humans, but this is the sort of thing that I remember most fondly.
I don’t get it. Is this a reference to people doing finger pistols?
It’s pure absurdism. The guy’s brain just works different. Some of it’s genius, some is quirky, and some is like this.
Cow tools.
I think it’s riffing on “handguns”

I barely get any jokes on this community. I guess I’m missing context or something
I don’t think you are, really.
There are a lot of references to stuff people in the 80s and 90s would be familiar with. But a lot is just absurd as well.
I think this one is more on the absurd end of the spectrum.
This reminds me of the cross-eyed glasses in The Jerk
Use the Opti-Grab!
I hope they fire when they sneeze
