Like many cities throughout the world, parts of the City of Austin are built upon karst, a type of land terrain characterized by the dissolution of rock by water. This creates an unique underground wilderness that is still being explored and studied today. Over the last 3 years, by employing a team of Cave Specialists to restore, study, explore and map Austin’s karst resources, the City of Austin Watershed Protection department has been a forerunner amongst municipal governments in the area of karst resource management. Come hear about this exciting work taking place in the tight spaces that are found below Austin.
