  • We need to solve carbon emissions 20 years ago.

    Why not heavily subsidize European solar, especially inverters while at the same time importing from China, especially solar cells and grid storage?

    Why is every one of these proposals “let’s fuck over the whole planet in order to prop up businesses that have lobbied us?” And never “let’s have the best of both worlds”?

    If they are worried about security, how about heavy subsidies for EU chipmakers to make and sell their chips in the EU. Currently, most of the fab capacity is in east Asia for chips needed for solar (ST, NXP, Nordic, and infineon). Many of them have a ton of fab capacity in the EU still, luckily, but all of their distribution goes through America and China. Even their own stores on their websites are not sold in the EU.

    Except NXP, the dutch chip giant, which has the vast majority of their capacity in east Asia AND all of their chips are distributed through Asia and america(so the Dutch being hypocritical yet again).

    Of how about, actually building and using unified, open source software platforms that connect locally to inverters and distribution components instead of relying on the cheapest ready-made manufacturer software? Oh wait, they don’t want to do that. That would require actual work and funding and not just grandstanding and writing a tariff on a piece of paper and letting the “poors” get fucked by it.

    I would bet ant amount of money that he has been bribed lobbied to speak on this by fossil fuel energy companies and auto companies. This is literally just a ploy to slow down renewable building and justify keeping energy prices sky high.

    How about requiring fucking parasite datacenters to actually offset their massive energy and building costs that we have to subsidize with energy infrastructure projects?

    It is never that, it is just grandstanding bullshit that harms everyone except the lobbyists, what a coincidence.



  • This seems like the perfect scam for Lemmy for setting up a fresh IP for launching a cyber attack/scam with a real residential IP. Helping a community member while circumventing shitty corporations. (Not saying OP is, just that it would be a decent scam)

    This requires either an insane amount of trust in a random person or gullibility. Plugging a random mailed device into your network, even behind a VLAN.

    I definitely would never do this if I didn’t have absolute full and complete access to every part of the pi’s software, or preferably set it up myself (optionally in collaboration with the requester) and the requester only had read-only access to it.

    Or Galaxy S II Epic 4G touch?

    Or Motorola Moto G that is 4 different phones, all with the exact same name.

    Or HTC One, One X, One X+, One XL, One V, One VX, One S, One Mini

    Large brands are hilariously bad at naming lol. I think it is the probably 200+ meetings they have about the name.

    Developed countries use literally anything else. TOTP apps, encrypted apps, Card reader code generation, identity providers, 3rd party verification programs, etc…

    America uses it because it is cheap and easy and it pushes the infrastructure cost to someone else, not because it is secure. My american bank I keep only had SMS from american numbers to start, now they have TOTP app support, passkey support, and are going to phase out their SMS because of security.

    Also, SIM phishing is pretty common… There doesn’t have to be any physical access to the phone. It is a standard phishing attack and they get all your SIM details and spoof it in an automated system.


  • RCS: google and apple can spy on your messages and control it

    SMS/MMS: everyone, google, apple, the government, your cell provider, their mother, and their 5th cousin twice removed can intercept and view your messages in plaintext and they are stored in plaintext forever at ISPs for anyone that wants them. I remember as a teen when my mother would get emails with documents containing every text that me or my sister had ever sent, from the SMS provider.

    Not to mention all the technical limitations. Nobody at all should be using SMS in 2026.

    Any encrypted message service (signal, delta chat, simplex, matrix, XMPP, etc…) Is a huge improvement to SMS in every way.








  • Good question!

    Sodium ion already had a reduced capacity (30% less at least than Lithium ion). And 2.5% of voltage is not 2.5% of capacity, something more like 3-4% (still small)

    You could then just choose to use a configurable lithium ion IC, but almost all of those have an undervoltage lock out (safety shutoff) that is 2-2.5V that you would have to stay above. Sodium ion drops out at 1.5V, so I would again be losing a chunk of capacity. If I lost 30%-35% of capacity on an already reduced capacity cell compared to lithium ion, then battery life would be quite disappointing.

    Do that rules out using a standard Lithium-ion charger.

    If I am building a custom charger anyway (most non- embedded systems have custom chargers), then might as well put in all the features now and get 100% of the capacity. Cells usually also have a higher lifespan (double or more) by dropping that high CV charge voltage 0.1V or so and settling for lower capacity, but Sodium Ion lifespan is already 3000-5000 cycles compares to lithium’s 500-1000 (lithium ion and li-po, lithium iron phosphate is in the higher range) so might as well then use the full capacity.
