Returning to the subject at hand: I can imagine very specialized “AI” being useful for scientifical research, where very knowledgeable people use it as a tool to facilitate processes but are nonetheless capable of reviewing whatever results it produces.

Not gigantic datacenters required for this but small, purpose made and perfected, locally run, even if on higher specifications hardware to do so, but machines built for a given task and purpose. The economic viability on it be damned; it’s a tool for research, it is not made to earn money.

Early 00’s I bought Dante’s Divine Comedy in full size, parchment paper, stitched volumes, with paper covers. It’s the most luxury print/pulp look I’ve ever stumbled upon. The three books set me back by €60 then. Adjusting for inflation, I’d risk they be priced at around €100 today.

Not a water treatment system as those being described in the thread but I have installed and used a water filter in my house to prevent sand and metal deposits to enter my home pipes, as the main is a very old galvanized tube.

It cost around 60€ and the instalation is pretty straigh forward if you are at ease with tools. The kit was composed of a stainless steel cartridge and a clear filter housing. A cartridge lasts about 2 years, more if routinely cleaned, and I had the option of cheaper fabric-like filters, discardable.

The results, for me personally, besides removing the solids, were negligeable but my partner is a water taster and was constantly stating the water tasted better after I installed the filter.

I went to a few stores, asking questions and comparing answers and solutions. I was not in need of a complex system but regardless I was presented with very exaggerated solutions and more basic and down to earth approaches. A serious hurdle I had to face was insisting that the system had to be easily instalable and maintainable by myself; most people tried to convince me to have everything installed by a plumber, no matter how simple the solution was.

As I walked out of my house, I made a conscious effort to take a peek on a few cars parked by the sidewalk and although many had the central console LCD installed, all had buttons and knobs to ajust and turn on and off things.

Where is this? I am seeing a growing resurgence of buttons and knobs in recently built cars. And I have the impression of reading somewhere conventional controls are to be mandatory again because the screen based controls pose a distraction for driving.

As a species, we are not prepared for wide empathy. The farther some event is from us, the easier it becomes to dissociate from. What can compensate for this is nurture and culture but self reflection is a very dificult, even painful, exercise.

And to use your words against yourself, logic takes no part in this. Logic just denotes a sequence of events or concepts that, for the person experiencing or describing, hold value. We are not rational nor logic. We spend a lifetime mostly reacting to what surrounds us, droning through life. Existing, taking hold of your own conscience is a difficult task. Teaching others to do it, even more.

I came into contact with /e/OS indirectly after discovering the Fairphone. The concept made sense. I do not enjoy their approach to offering the services they do but I admit I am even less of a fan of the approach of IodeOS, with their parental control tools; I respect some people will want that, I just think it is not the correct nor the best.

Regarding phones, IodeOS does have quite the line-up but most of the models I’d consider purchasing are either out of stock or pricier than the GS6 Murena offers. In a perfect world I’d rather just buy the full pair of Fairphone+/e/OS and be done with but it is not a casual decision I am taking here and it is cash stressing.

Murena OS seems at the moment the best choice for what I intend. I may lose my banking apps but I can live with that,

More people carry a smartphone nowadays than those that have a computer at home. Banks are not stupid; they cater to the clientele and that clientele is shifting towards apps at an accelerated pace. There are a couple of banks operating in my country that don’t even have any other access but their app: no website, no physical locations.

I have an integrated payment system that works directly from my banking apps; without those apps, I’m out of the system, as it depends on push notifications to accept and allow transfers, payments, etc. Another ugly thing happening is the slow but steady shift of banks towards app-only remote access. My day to day bank is somewhat a middle of the ground but they’ve invested heavily into their app, while ignoring their website, that stopped somewhere around 2015. It’s clunky, hard to use and even lacks some options that are only available on the app or at a walk-in location but those are but a few in the entire country. There are already two banks operating in my country that are app only for access.

Another example is my carrier. Their entire support is done through the app. No email, no phone, nothing. Unless I have their app, if I have an issue, I’m locked out. I can switch carrier and avoid this problem but that implies getting worst coverage.

And I wasn’t originally considering it but my government does have an app that concentrates a number of direct services and allows for digital copies of official documents to be available.
