Can confirm, kagi has been great. I use their search as well as their news feed. They even have a filter for fediverse threads. (It doesn’t ever return many results, but they’re definitely ahead of the curve by having a replacement for the Google to Reddit pipeline ready to go.)

I find it worth paying for just to avoid dealing with google and Bing. Most of the “alt” search engines are just skins for those two anyway. I figure that’s just the cost to continue procrastinating setting up searx on my homelab, and I’m fine with that.

Capture is a lot less concrete, more nebulous and it’s harder to verify it’s happening. At least with today’s tech. A massive bait and switch has already happened with Canada’s program, which as it happens will only capture carbon which represents a fraction of the externalities of shipping it around.

ianal, but I don’t think they could be charged with both murder and manslaughter. Wouldn’t that violate double jeopardy? Otherwise there would be absurdities where people get charged with the whole spectrum of criminal intent just to see what sticks. (Which does totally happen anyway, when they can get away with it.)

Though we all think we know what happened, intentionally and/or knowingly are much harder to prove. It has to be “beyond reasonable doubt”. So if the available facts don’t back that up, a manslaughter case could be a much safer way to get a conviction. It could be bumped up to murder if new facts come to light as part of the investigation, though.

It’s like parents who pick a favourite child - Canada, always quiet and polite at tea and supper. We’ll let them commit a few war crimes, as a treat. I’m sure they’re not any trouble when we’re not looking.

In theory I could do my job from a good screen, because everything is either in a browser or a remote server somewhere. Anything would run better than the POS surface laptop they issued, and I’d surely be more productive and efficient if I purpose-built a workstation with open-source, tailored to what I do.

I was at the local grocery store last night. Sunday night just before closing and produce was stocked to the gills. Berries and greens were especially untouched, but everything else was at least 80℅ full as well.

It was very odd to be there on a Sunday night with it looking like it does on a typical Saturday morning. A tight department with smart buyers should look basically ransacked by then, with a lot of out-of-stocks if the store had decent traffic over the weekend.

Point is, since we’re lacking all but the most generic info, most people are just playing it safe by avoiding fresh produce altogether, and the state of things right now is about to produce some severe knock-on effects for fresh foods.

Grocery store dumpsters will be full in a few days. Next it will be the produce warehouses, and that shockwave will ripple all the way back to the producers/farms within weeks. Not just the waste, but orders in general will slow and the industry will suffer overall shrinkage. Even if the outbreak ends tomorrow – if the ambiguity continues, a general lack of trust will linger for quite some time, fresh foods may become more expensive for a while, and the supply chain will be destabilized.

Net emissions. If the fuel is made from captured CO₂, there may be some loss in manufacturing but it won’t be nearly as emitting as the current process of extracting and refining virgin oil into petrol.

Hopefully I’m wrong, but I think a lot of the carbon capture stuff will either be pipe dreams or scams.
