On the whole “issue caused by malign being” thing, I completely agree with you that they are similar to modern conspiracy theories. They are ways to create meaning in a chaotic world.

On the “rock formation is a petrified giant” and similar stories, I think it’s humanity’s desire to always tell stories. In the specific case you linked, I think pattern recognition plays a role too. We see a human shaped rock and think it must be a petrified human. And then make up a story about.
