We recently covered a low-profile GeForce RTX 3060 that was spotted in a Bilibili video from China. Now, a very similar single-slot GeForce RTX 3060 with no external power connector is available to buy at a major retailer. The SRhonyra RTX 3060 Low Profile showed up on Newegg for $495.59, and...
But why? Its like shutting off half the cylinders on your car engine.
3060s are popular at a certain price/performance level for certain AI workloads, because they have a lot of VRAM for the price. And underclocking GPUs is also somewhat popular because AI workloads are bottlenecked more by memory bandwidth that compute speed.
At least…in theory. I’ve never heard of people underclocking 3060s specifically. I’m skeptical. And at $500 I think they’ve thrown price/performance out the window.
I’m sure some crazy person is going to put 8 of these in a jury-rigged case made of scrap wood.
Because you are sticking the other half of the cylinders in a motorcycle
Still a good metaphor. Imagine building a motorcycle around a v8 car engine with half the cylinders disabled.
