Exclusive: Tawny Newsome Gives Update On Live-Action Star Trek Comedy – “We’re Ready!”

We spoke to the 'Lower Decks' star and 'Academy' writer at the 'Starfleet Academy' NYC premiere.

This was the rundown of the show’s development in January:

The original logline released at Comic-Con 2024 said the show is about “Federation outsiders serving a gleaming resort planet find out their day-to-day exploits are being broadcast to the entire quadrant.” Newsome has previously clarified that the resort isn’t Risa, noting “I think it’s going to answer some questions about what non-Federation [worlds] look like.” Last year, Newsome told TrekMovie the concept had evolved since then but confirmed she would star in the show (as a new character), and the comedy series would be set in the early 25th century, following the events of Star Trek: Picard.

I dunno, Newsome has been one of the breakout talents of the latest Trek generation. She was solid on LDS, and her contributions to SFA were standouts in season 1 I think.

I would’ve loved to see what she had to offer as writer/lead on a live action comedy. She wasn’t exactly confident the show would be picked up when the article was written, though:

“The conversations that I have had is, ‘Hey, we finished writing it,’ and everyone said, ‘Yep, we love it.’ And then we turned it in, and then it was Christmas…. The business is in an interesting place right now… Who knows?”

Seeing how there is no Trek in current production and Secret Hideout seems to be out, things are even more up in the air by all accounts 😕

    I had issues with “The trouble with Edward”; specifically the part about … eating aliens. Maybe it felt a little too much like something Earth people might actually do.

    But generally speaking, Short treks had some genuinely good, fresh ideas. The one with Una and Spock stuck in a turbolift genuinely had me excited for SNW. Unfortunately, the singing peaked in the short version.

      thanks, i had forgotten the episode title. i honestly don’t remember the eating aliens bit. sounds weird. i just remember thinking it was a satisfying comic premise that was really well executed. edward had the frustrating hubris of a michael scott. if a show in that vein centered around a space station á la ds9 were made, i think it could work. i know i’d be in.

        Wasn’t it heavily implied that they (or at least Edward) were eating Tribbles? If I imagined it I think I might have to go to therapy.

        Either way, at this point I’ll be happy with any Trek based show that commits to its own premise and telling some good stories within that framework. This time last year I didn’t think that was too much to ask, but now 🤷
