Apropos of absolutely nothing, I swear, I thought this might be a fine time to revisit Cory Doctorow’s “enshittification” essay.
Here is how platforms die: first, they are good to their users; then they abuse their users to make things better for their business customers; finally, they abuse those business customers to claw back all the value for themselves. Then, they die.
Love that essay and think about it all the time. He just posted this yesterday too, feels kind of like a follow-up to the “Enshittification” one.
