A partially filled tank breathes air when the temperature changes outside, and every time it does, a bit of water condenses inside.

That’s true for diesel. First gen bio-diesel was hydrophilic to make that even worse. Absolutely fill up the tank before leaving it over winter.

Gasoline keeps evaporating and essentially only breathes out until the tank is empty.

Only if its hot out. The vapor pressure of gasoline below 20c is less than 1 bar

Exactly this. The ethanol in gas absorbs water from the air and turns into weird nasty gas tank sludge.

There are options to buy gas without ethanol in my country. It’s expensive, but everyone owning some old school vehicle buys these exactly for long pauses without actually driving the car.

It’s possible in the US, but generally not at common gas stations. You have to find marine or airport gas stations. The only other place I’ve ever seen it is a place called Sheetz.

Weve got it at basically every kwiktrip in MN but thats probably because it’s commonly used in seasonal vehicles (ATVs, Boats, Snowmobiles, etc.)

Actually I’ve seen more and more gas stations start carrying no ethanol recently. It used to be extremely limited and the biggest chain I knew of that offered it was Phillips 66, but now the top 3 chains in my area offer it.
