More players than ever are choosing to play Steam games with a controller, and we thought it would be a good time to share some stats about controller usage on Steam along with an update about Steam Input. Xbox controllers work with windows with pretty much zero configuration. Either use USB or the appropriate receiver dongle. This probably contributes a lot to it’s popularity.
Also the older and newer style controllers likely all just report as Xbox controllers and the wired 360 controllers are dirt cheap

They work on some Linux distros with zero configuration as well. Mint being one of those.

I have 5 Xbox One bluetooth controllers just for PC gaming
Okay, I have to ask - why five?
Some are custom ones with nice grips, but mostly for local couch gaming with multiple friends that don’t have their own controllers.
