At this point I’m not sure why House republicans wouldn’t want Hakeem Jeffries as the Speaker. At least then they could run home to their constituents and pretend to be a united party that’s accomplishing nothing just because the Speaker is from the Democratic Party. Their base won’t care that they’re the majority party and would’ve had to let it happen. They’ll just accept that everything from here on out is “the democrat’s fault” as they always do anyways.

If 10 Republicans voted present or were conveniently occupied elsewhere, Jeffries would win.

They could not vote, but also there are purple districts where “I’m doing what’s best for the country” would play better than endless bickering.

          take one for the team?

The GOP is the party of ruthless, naked selfishness, and Republicans have over and over and over again demonstrated that they’d rather let the entire nation descend into chaos than act against their own, personal self-interest.

I doubt anyone in the current GOP even knows what “taking one for the team” means.

I get where you’re coming from and I expect you to be right in the end, but considering how many established GOP douchebags spent four years kissing Trump’s ass after deriding Trump as an existential threat to the party, it think they definitely know how to degrade themselves in service to the PARTY. I don’t expect them to take one for the country, but they often are willing to do what works for the party
