Usually one book will just lead to another. If I have no idea, I just look up some best lists. “Best <science fiction, fantasy, thriller,etc.> books of <decade, all-time, new, etc.>”. I’ve found that most of these lists are at least somewhat vetted and gives me somewhere to start.
