Great Lakes region, USA. May 2026.

Some recent posts here inspired me to try my hand at a composite photo. After much trial and error I kinda figured out how to do this in GIMP and I’m really happy how this turned out. Thank you all for the inspiration. I plan to make many more like this.

Any tips would be greatly appreciated. I don’t really know GIMP all that well. I barely know Darktable.

I don’t have photography tips but as someone not that good at identifying birds, I think I know this one. I just had to look how a carouge à épaulettes is called in English. So, is that a red-winged blackbird?

Also, names of birds in English are so original. /s

      Yup, a red-winged blackbird.

carouge à épaulettes is an interesting and descriptive name. Blackbird with shoulder pads.

That is an exquisitely beautiful picture and I have never seen a red winged blackbird in that way before. Amazing.

Thank you for the kind words. I’ll be editing more photos like this in the future. It’s a little work, but the result looks so cool IMO. I’ve seen a million red-winged blackbirds take off, but it’s something to see it all at once like this.
