Some news

  • Henderson has not traveled.

  • Trent seems like he is starting in midfield.

  • Ali apparently has a slight knock and left out as a precaution.

  • 2 x 45 minute teams likely.

  • First match in Karlsruher’s new stadium, so it is a big sold out event for them

    First half report

Overall: As expected, a very preseason type of game. Currently 1-1. Some interesting moments, some mistakes, sometimes a little slow.

Moment of the match: Sprinklers went off randomly preventing the match to restart after the drinks break. And the on-screen graphics declared someone on Karlsruher was Jurgen Klopp at one point.

    Notes

    • Darwin 1-0 – slightly weird goal.

    • VVD disallowed goal (from a corner. Clearly pushed the player over)

    • 3-box-3 still going. Bradley as RB, Trent as 6, Clark as 8. All did well. Both the kids looked really exciting – Bradley was sometimes the furthest up.

    • Clark made some interesting runs. Really impressed compared to last season where, for me, he never stood out when he was played.

    • Feels like Darwin is pressing a little more intensely compared to last season

    • Dom did several good lifted passes from the midfield to Salah.

    • At about minute 30, Clark and Dom switched left and right 8s. I’d say Dom got more involved in the game then.

    • 1-1 Great volley by their player from a free kick. Not really any fault by a Liverpool player. (If any fault could be found it would be Konate who gave away the free kick)

Looks like Trent is in the 6, and Clark is the right 8

And Bradley seems to be doing an inverted thing

Edit: since not very much activity here I’ll post a summary after each half.

Looks like it’s giving Bradley a chance doing the inverted thing, which he is doing quite well. Might be more looking at whether Bradley is a backup for Trent rather than Trent is a long term 6 option. But we will see.

    Second half.

    Line up: everything is different.

    Doak, Gakpo, Jota up front.

Macca, Scanlon and McConnell in midfield - I think

Kostas, Matip, Quansah, Gomez, in defence.

    Jaros in goal.

    Notes

    • Kostas is in Midfield!? - I think they are trying inverted LB with Kostas? Scanlon (left 8) very wide left at all times and Kostas drifting more inside than usual. Interesting and unexpected development.
    • Goal 2-1 -> whatever is going on on the left side left a lot of space open.
    • Doak is exciting.
    • This half is much more 3-3-4 in possession. Kostas doing the inverted LB, but Scanlon on the left is as wide and as high as Doak on the right.
    • Doak is so exciting.
    • Goal 2-2 -> Gakpo goal, Jota assist from a Gomez cross.
    • Looked like a penalty given when Jota brought down in the box
    • Goal 2-3 -> Last minute winner by Jota. Gakpo assist. Jota dribbles and puts it past the keeper.
    • Goal 2-4 -> Macca assist and Jota scored.

Full time 2-4 Liverpool. Darin, Gakpo and Jota (x2). Lots of positives.

Thoughts: Many had written Kostas off this year for the new formation. But I don’t think it looked to bad when flipping for the 3-box-3 with Gomez as RB/CB and Kostas as the inverted player. It was unexpected, and we may never see it again. But I don’t think it was bad.
