Someone doesn’t like these TikTok stories, so here’s another one
Wouldn’t Congress rather do something useful for a change.
I love how the conversation is always “ban tiktok” and not “ban the specific practices that make TikTok problematic”.
Don’t want to upset the massive corporate overlords that run the US social media companies doing the exact same things.
This guy gets it.
All the discussion around banning Tiktok is just so an American company can take its place.
Useful idiots and tools don’t understand this, though.
I hate what ticktock has done to the internet video environment.
I know vine probably started it, but i prefer long form entertainment not 15 second crappy skits.
So if tiktok goes away something else will replace it but maybe a week or two of better internet.
It really has diluted the quality of the entire Internet’s video content.
Sure there are a few good things that come from tiktok (from what I’ve heard, I don’t use the app), but overall I think the app is a net negative.
This bill passed out of house committee unanimously and is on its way to the floor.
As a non-american, I have suspicions about this whole anti-tiktok agenda that seems to be going on. I was against tiktok at first, and think it’s awful for fuelling that addictive/dopamine social media system. But now that I have my interests firmly in it, i learn a lot about my hobbies from it nice and quickly. However, Instagram reels is the exact same model, is that up for banning too? The excuse of it being Chinese spyware over Meta’s own homegrown US spyware is another aspect, however all these companies already have our data anyway…
Tinfoil hat, but I think this is entirely about media control. Nations are beginning to realise that they can no longer control narratives if the population can just go and see all the other perspectives online- if they can apply critical thinking and parse through whats real or fake. But most of the awful things happening in Gaza right now have been pushed by insta, tiktok, twitter, etc. The panic that the narrative can no longer be controlled on global political events like this is exactly why country leaders and politicians would be concerned.
Is the US blocking Insta, Twitter, Lemmy, Reddit, blogs, or any other source of Gaza news?
Remember, anyone who is against Tiktok being legal just wants a US company to make their profits instead.
They are useful idiots without even realizing it.
tiktok fucking sucks but banning the entire app for everyone is insane. this could induce a severe posting gap, causing the US to fall behind in important discourse and cultural relevance
Agreed. Those downvoting you are useful idiots who don’t realize there’s a trade war going on between the US and China.
This is all an effort to look out for our respective rulers.
America’s own great firewall is getting set up before our eyes. It’s funny how America’s distain for China just makes for an imitation.
False equivalence if I’ve ever seen it. Does the US currently do any systematic blocking? Compared to comprehensive firewalling and legal consequences for Chinese citizens.
Not until the tiktok block we’re literally talking about
It would be very hard for the US government to censor everything when all of the infrastructure is privately owned.
No it wouldn’t.
