He likely didn’t have an effective or practical way to avoid getting conscripted, and attempting to surrender or defect means he likely gets shot in the back by his own officers or noncoms. Or he can fight, and possibly survive, but maybe he believes that to be morally despicable. Maybe he was already injured, and knew that there was no significant chance of a medevac, and so ended his own life quickly rather than waiting to bleed out or die from infection.
Surrender and desertion are always choices. And while there’s a risk of death when trying to surrender or defect, that means there’s a chance he will live.
