Heck, I’d be pulling more than that if I were a self-employed consultant rather than under a consulting firm, in our small city in northern Scandinavia.
Now I’m raking in a little below that, and I’m taking out like a third of it as actual salary and saving the rest, to avoid high taxes, and to to pay for a leased car, pension saving, extra insurance etc, before taxes. But after all that I’m probably saving $3k every month tax free, and maybe $1,5k in my bank account.
Engineering life is pretty okay. Still can’t afford a house yet though. Thanks boomers.

1·10 days agoWith 16 GB on my old work laptop, I am running Helix editor with a couple of LSPs, no AI whatsoever, and like a few tabs open with documentation and our somewhat memory unoptimized page. I sometimes have to close the tab so as not to crash the system. Memory is really abused these days.

1·10 days agoSlack, VS Code, Firefox, Steam, Rocket League, combined with no swap file, and Linux just handing out memory allocations like they’re bank loans meant to be paid back eventually and with interest, you get a system that just halts when the memory is finished.

1·10 days agoI’m not saying the game needs 32 GB, am I.
I’m saying I had to close all those other memory hoggers in order to keep playing. With 64 GB, I don’t.

211·11 days ago32 GB is a joke. With 32 GB, I had to close a few programs and my browser to reliably run Rocket League on Linux without the whole system grinding to a halt.
Managed to snag a whole new beast system with 64 GB before the prices shot up. Lucky me.

2·20 days agoLike surfers carried to the shore, these stars were caught in the spiral waves of our swirling galaxy, which carried them outward and dumped them in the outer regions of the Milky Way. Naturally, it takes longer for them to travel farther, so the outermost stars are also the oldest.
Funny, that’s not what the graph is showing, by my interpretation. To me or looks like the innermost stars are the oldest. Then the mid stars are the youngest, then outermost are older again but not the oldest.
Oh god, don’t spill, DON’T SPILL

5·20 days agoAs a family with 2 kids under 7, I can tell you that the fucking-each-other-over aspect is NOT very fun. 😆️ It’s the worst aspect of it for my kids, because everyone gets in each other’s way and you bump into each other and you can accidentally pick each other up and toss each other over edges and stuff.
Mario Wonder is a bit more forgiving with that because you can essentially pass through each other in the 2-D plane, but there you have the aspect of “waiting for each other”, otherwise you get ghostified. Also a source of emotional pain… 😭️

1·21 days agoI don’t get that. The hands work independently from each other so it should be optimal on both sides independently as well. So if you play a lot of stick movement games you’d want sticks to be forward for the thumbs, but button-heavy games should have buttons forward instead of inwards. For me, I play Rocket League, so I want stick forward on right side, buttons forward on left side, like Xbox. But if I played a lot of shooters or similar, I’d probably want both sticks forward.

Are we twins? Came to say basically exactly this. ❤️
