Canada@lemmy.ca•'MAID is not death on demand': Physicians decry proposed Alberta assistance in dying billEnglish
4·4 days agoI’m mixed on this. I can understand this specific bill from the UCP, but even if they genuinely have the same concerns as I do, I don’t trust them to do what’s right to address the issues that MAiD has.
I do think MAiD is way too accessible, and has been used as a means to shelve the issues of the system for disabled people. Like, even a lot of Track 1 applications have been found to be from people who were denied proper access to pain relief.
Also, maybe people would be less inclined to access MAiD as an option if we made life easier and more accessible for them? The UCP has already expressed interest in making life harder for disabled people by cutting the $200 from AISH for those accessing the Canadian Disability Benefit, which can already be a hassle to apply for.

2·4 days agoWish I was able to donate plasma, but the nurses at Canadian Blood Services advised against it in my case since they only want me doing whole blood seeing that I’m O-.
Otherwise I’d be there each week rather than once every two months.

1·4 days agoYou could try looking at a currency exchange business.
It could be a longshot because of the currency type, but I go to one every now and again to exchange Pound Sterling.

New Democratic Party@lemmy.ca•Emily Lowan offers congratulations to Avi LewisEnglish
4·4 days agoI’ll call to congratulate you once I get through to Telus.
Is this supposed to be a joke about Telus’ customer service or such, or is she genuinely having issues? I’m just confused by that part.
Otherwise, love Emily Lowan, and feel she made a great move by congratulating Avi in this way. Feels like it’s genuine rather than something purely done out of PR and “respectability”.
Never heard “running shoes”, but I still hear the term “runners” here and there. Rare that I hear people say “sneakers”, but I’m not a sporty person.

Canada@lemmy.ca•Avi Lewis wins NDP leadership race in decisive first-ballot victoryEnglish
16·5 days agoI couldn’t believe it. I knew Tony (God bless that man) would come in last, but I was certain Rob would come third behind either McPherson or Lewis.
Tanille beating him out either shows that people were more peeved about the AI thing than I would have expected, that I underestimated Tanille’s charm and hard work, or both.
Glad to have had Tanille ranked second on my ballot, but I wasn’t expecting her to have had that much momentum. Genuinely proud of her.

Canada@lemmy.ca•Canada will cancel thousands of refugee claims under new retroactive lawEnglish
9·6 days agoI can understand this, but I can’t help but worry about friend of mine from Ukraine who came here through a work permit and has been trying to get refugee status since then at the risk of being sent back now that their permit has expired. They didn’t apply as a refugee initially since they came here a few months before the invasion.
They’ve told me the struggles with the waitlists, and it just sounds so frustrating. I understand student visa fraud being an issue, but doing a blanket cutoff like this will put lives at risk.

Canada@lemmy.ca•Canada’s Foreign Minister Assures Ukrainian Community of Continued SupportEnglish
4·7 days agoJust a bunch of tankies that think that because America=bad, that means Russia=good.
Say anything supportive of Ukraine or Ukrainians and you’re basically a Nazi in their eyes seeing that Russia once claimed that occupying and invading Ukraine was to “de-Nazify” it.
There’s an unfortunately prevalent amount of them on the threadiverse, in part because Lemmy is developed by two Communists. What people seem to fail to understand is that even if you ascribe to communism, you can still be against an illegal invasion under international law and be supportive of literal refugees.

I’ll believe it when I see it. Not decrying the intervention in Iran, having officials state support for US energy dominance, refusing to ban ICE offices in Canada.
This man bends the knee and postures himself to be a mastermind, and I hate that the media eats this narrative up

15·12 days agoI will never understand what the hell went through Trudeau’s mind when he thought going through with the F-35 deal was a good move.
He literally told Canadians that the Liberals would never go ahead with buying F-35s, and then trapped us into this predicament by going back on his word when it was clear as day how hilariously unreliable the aircraft were.

51·12 days agoHistorical significance.
It’s one thing for the prime minister to be moved elsewhere for business, especially with security concerns like 24 Sussex has, but to let a property that’s important to Canadian history and heritage fall into disrepair is outright irresponsible of the government.
