  • If it wasn’t historically relevant, why would they use the word on their page? Coed is relevant because women used to segregated or not be eligible for higher education at all. He’s taking a shot at women, not people of colour. He yearns for the times women “knew their place” (ugh, I feel gross just typing that) and didn’t seek education or a career.

In any case, that clip sounds to me like “coloured” only a tiny bit more than it sounds like “college”, which is to say, not much.

  • I don’t know how anyone could have possibly heard that as college. To me he quite obviously says “co-ed” which also happens to make more sense if you read their about page:

The Trailblazers of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated Zeta Phi Beta Sorority would be remiss not to pay homage to the first women who believed in the need for a new and different type of Greek-lettered organization and acted upon that need. To these women, Zeta was more than an organization – it was a movement. This belief system reflected, at its core, the desire to provide true Service, embrace Scholarship, set a standard for Sisterly Love, and define the noble concept of Finer Womanhood. This belief has sustained and encouraged Zetas worldwide to hold fast to the ideals initiated and developed by its earliest members.

The Founders of Zeta were strong, principled coeds who possessed a great deal of modesty, strength of character, and pride in academic achievement. They are a worthy foundation upon which to base our illustrious Sorority.

  • How does corpo PR still mess this sort of thing up so badly? Just issue a statement:

    1. Acknowledge and take responsibility for your part of the incident. DO NOT try and shirk any responsibility.

    2. Outline what you will do to prevent the problem for happening again.

    3. Commit to providing progress updates on the resolution.

On issues of this magnitude, there’s simply no way to compensate everyone whose time and effort you’ve wasted. Don’t insult people with a meagre offering. Instead, commit those resources to a resolution, and simply ask for forgiveness.

  • I don’t think that’s how that works.

If people predominantly bet for one side, the odds have to lower so the house still wins in either case. Basically, there has to be enough taken in on all other options to cover the payout of any winning option.

If there’s no selection bias in betting skill level of the players, then the betting odds should roughly reflect the actual probability. But if one side’s bet has no basis in reality, then the odds can get very skewed.

And in those cases, it’s not the oddsmakers that are wrong, it’s the betters. The house always wins.

  • I mostly agree. I kinda felt decisions mattered in a game like Disco Elysium, but you’re still essentially on the same overall track; the only way, things could really matter is if the story lines completely diverge, and that almost never financially makes sense, since you’d essentially be making multiple games and selling it as one.

I don’t think that’s the distinction that GGG is trying to get at though. What they’re going for is making micro-decisions matter. You have to turn your brain on and use it for combat most of the time to stay alive, so you can’t just zone out and go on autopilot then pay attention for when you know you’re going to need it. They want to focus on a much more active play style where there are more telegraphed attacks and dodging all the time.

I enjoy those mechanics too, but I don’t want them all the time. I want a blend of hard and easy, if that makes sense. I want to be able to blast through some content and make my goal clearing it as efficiently as possible, not worrying about dying every second.

And maybe I’m concerned about nothing, and it won’t be that way, but I’d rather try it and be happily surprised than go in with high expectations and be disappointed.
