  • You don’t get it. I am saying that indeed the existence of something is the thing that has been politicised. Some people legitimately believe that transgender is not a real thing and is instead some kind of a delusion or mental illness. Even ignoring that coming out as a concept is political. We wouldn’t have the concept of coming out if being queer hadn’t been prosecuted and stigmatized in the first place. Being gay or trans would just be a property someone has like having brown eyes.

  • I think the main things that are holding us back from this vision at the moment is reproduction and the quality of gender affirming care. You still need to have male and female to have children and for now we can’t change which you belong to. If we could do like the Culture and have people that father one child and give birth to another this would all be a lot simpler.

I actually think that without gender roles and norms many people would end up presenting as what we would consider non-binary today. I don’t think it’s actually true that male and female people actually behave like men and women inherently for the most part. I think the kinds of behaviour that’s actually determined by chromosomes and hormones is fairly limited.

  • Nope. The issue of trans people has basically always been political in my lifetime. I am not saying it should be political, or that it will always be considered political, but to say it isn’t political right now is ignoring the reality and is dismissing the real issues faced by transgender people. You can’t change reality by making statements because reality is not performative. The way the world works does not revolve around what you say or what you think.

  • Yeah that’s exactly what Windows is like. Things normally work fine but when something goes wrong it can be a real pain and often simpler just to reinstall as Windows doesn’t always give you good tools to fix it. When something goes wrong on a Linux system there is pretty much always some way of fixing it because it’s an open book with good tooling for diagnostics and repair. The problem is things tend to go wrong more often or be more clunky to use in the first instance.

  • Okay modern China I get, but the USSR? You don’t think the USSR were a socialist republic at any point? What kind of communist even are you?

You argue the Culture are communist but the compact isn’t based on a monopoly of violence yet I am sure if you tried to use violence that the Minds didn’t agree with they would have you stopped in short order. Don’t they have something called a slap drone in the culture for people who do things that are unpopular? Since they don’t have laws it’s not like you get a court trial even. I would argue it’s worse than the Affini which at least pretends to have procedures and rules. Minds can basically do whatever they want provided the other Minds approve.
