Yellowstone take my energy ༼ つ ◕_◕ ༽つ
I just wanted to broaden the horizon and yap about an interest
It was an excellent comment, I learned from it and have an even deeper appreciation for GPS now.
I agree that GPS has had a significant even profound effect on us as a global society and as individuals, I just think that it’s far from the only technology that has. But fair enough on it being one of the better examples.
Alright this just struck me as so on so many levels. Like, not just the randomness of GPS being the specific thing that is the singular modern miracle, not just that new-fangled technology existing that people who are now dead didn’t get to experience is the reason why it’s sad they’re dead, but even why it is noteworthy that Helen Mirren has these thoughts, and why was she saying this of Kurt Cobain of all people?
I figured there had to be more context, and there is, but nowhere near enough to adequately answer my questions. Apparently though, this isn’t a one-off. She is known for talking about Kurt Cobain and how modern technology relates to his death.
Of course, the comment came amid a broader point she was making about aging. “If you’re lucky, you get to be older,” she continued. “And then there you are. Oh my God, I’m 79! I never thought I’d be 79. And then you say, OK, well this is it. This is what 79 is. And it’s kind of OK. It’s not brilliant, but it was not that brilliant to be 25 either.”
Mirren has referenced Cobain numerous times in the past when discussing the nature of aging. In 2014, she told Oprah Winfrey, “Look at Kurt Cobain — he hardly even saw a computer! The digital stuff that’s going on is so exciting. I’m just so curious about what happens next.”
A year later, she told Cosmopolitan, “I was thinking about Kurt Cobain the other day and he died without knowing the internet, and I’m totally blown away by that.” And, in 2016, she said to the Daily Mail, “If I’d died at 27, the age that Kurt Cobain [of rock band Nirvana] died in 1994, I’d never have even known there was an internet! Incredible things are happening all the time and I can’t wait to see what comes next.”
I suppose it’s mildly (very mildly) interesting to know that some celebrity I have a vague notion of (Mirren) is an unlikely fan of another celebrity who I was once a huge fan of. And I guess everyone has their own unique ways of contemplating their mortality.
Awesome!
I’m a little sad that yt.artemislena.eu never works anymore (even when the backend is up). Of course most of the invidious instances don’t work anymore after a big youtube crackdown. But ggtyler.dev usually still works great (cal1.iv.ggtyler.dev and pol1.iv.ggtyler.dev) and they are outspoken trans allies too displaying the text: “Also, 🏳️⚧️ trans rights :)” appearing above every single youtube video.
Anyway, it would be so damn cool if webrings made a real comeback.
Yeah, unfortunately 12ft.io didn’t keep up with the paywall arms race. It’s too bad because it was one of those things that a lot of people knew about, many of whom may now just give up when it doesn’t work even though there are other options out there.
As one example, there’s now also the 13ft ladder: https://github.com/wasi-master/13ft It’s like 12ft but self hosted. Sounds really good but I can’t vouch for it yet.
I mostly would just archive a paywallrd page with archive.is (aka archive.today, archive.ph, etc.) and that worked great and also helped take traffic away from asshole sites that paywall content. Unfortunately, archive started requiring a cloud flare captcha when archiving a page. This is a deal breaker for me since captcha totally deanonymizes you and is used for tracking purposes and even to train AI. So it defeats a good chunk of the purpose of using an archive site.
Still, there’s a good chance that someone else already archived the page you want to see, so putting the url in archive.is search can be enough to bypass the paywall.
Woah, what an odd coincidence for me. I haven’t listened to Rammstein for literally years (I was never much of a fan or anything, just liked some of the stuff they did and knew they were cool as far as politics). But just last night I happened to think of one of their songs and decided to loop it a few times for nostalgia’s sake. Crazy. Anyway, as everyone has said, they are pretty decent politically, but I had no idea there was any SA stuff, so that’s a major disappointment but not totally surprising). The song that I happened to remember and that made me want to listen to them for the first time in years was “Amerika.” It goes even harder with the video.

English-translated lyrics:
[Chorus]
We’re all living in America
America is wonderful
We’re all living in America
America, America
We’re all living in America
America is wonderful
We’re all living in America
America, America
[Verse 1]
When we dance I want to lead
When you turn yourself around alone
Let us control you a bit
I’ll show you how to walk right
We create a lovely round dance
The freedom plays from all violins
Music comes from the White House
And in front of Paris stands Mickey Mouse
[Chorus]
We’re all living in America
America is wonderful
We’re all living in America
America, America
[Verse 2]
I know the very useful steps
And I will protect you from missteps
And who does not want to dance at the end
Does not know that he must dance
We create a lovely round dance
I will show you the direction
To Africa comes Santa Claus
And in front of Paris stands Mickey Mouse
[Chorus]
We’re all living in America
America is wonderful
We’re all living in America
America, America
We’re all living in America
Coca Cola, Wonderbra
We’re all living in America
America, America
[Bridge]
This is not a love song
This is not a love song
I don’t sing my mother tongue
No, this is not a love song
[Chorus]
We’re all living in America
America is wonderful
We’re all living in America
America, America
We’re all living in America
Coca Cola, sometimes war
We’re all living in America
America, America
The change in rhetoric and policy over the last year indicates that Xi’s purge of the liberals has most likely failed, and they’re back running the show now.
Can the lib contingent in China continue to thrive as the US ramps up its cold war against the entire nation though? It seems like as the Great Satan forces further conflict (economic if not militarily) with China, the conditions for the liberals in the CPC will become less and less hospitable while the Marxist elements will be proven both right and more prepared for the inevitability of increasing US imperial aggression. Also, if Xi was able to purge so many of them before, is there anything fundamentally different now that he won’t be able to do it again?
It fucking sucks how unusable the internet has become for that sort of thing. Reddit swept up all the old forums, monopolized that kind of community discussion-based information and then completely enshittified it. Maybe I shouldn’t say “completely” because they’re still in the process of making it worse.
I hope you were able to eventually find information that satisfied you, but in case you didn’t already see this elsewhere, it’s not color alone that should necessarily be cause for concern, it’s also consistency (and by that I mean texture, not regularity). If it’s black but normal shape and texture for you, like many others here have said, it’s reasonably likely just a matter of something you ate (like the chips you mentioned). However, if the consistency is also abnormal for you, especially if it’s really tarry (black tar) then that may warrant telling a med professional irl about it.
I remember someone (probably here) saying that the Shadow of Mordor/War “Nemesis System” could have become a widespread gaming system similar to how the unique mechanics of Dark Souls games became an entire genre and now there are all kinds of games that use the system and tinker with variations on it to great effect now called “soulslike.” But because WB or Ubisoft or whoever made a show of patenting the system (and apparently won actual lawsuit challenges to it?) there is no genre of “shadowlike” or “nemesislike” games. That it was a clear example of a patent actually depriving us of an entire potential genre of games.
edit: I swear I read this whole thread before commenting but I missed EllenKelly already mentioned it. And yes, it has been discussed around here.
I think we should be careful about saying that sort of thing. Strokes did happen to some otherwise healthy people at that age, it was just rare. The rate of strokes in younger people has been growing at least since the 90s. What would be really helpful knowledge would be to find out what the statistics are on the rate of strokes in otherwise healthy people under 60 over a really long time and see if there’s an uptick around 2020. I’d bet anything that there is. The question I’d have is how big the difference is between pre and post 2020.
Edit: Sure enough.
One study published in JAMA in April 2021 found that the risk of stroke was more than twice as high for COVID-19 patients when compared to people of the same age, sex, and ethnicity in the general population—82.6 cases per 100,000 people compared to 38.2 cases for those without a COVID-19 diagnosis.
In another Swedish study published in the August 14, 2021 issue of The Lancet, researchers found that within a week of a COVID-19 diagnosis, a person’s risk of heart attack was three to eight times higher than normal, and their risk of stroke was three to six times higher. The study revealed these risks remained high for at least a month. The average age of people in the study was only 48 years.

As information about COVID-19 has unfolded since the first cases were seen in the U.S., doctors in New York City have been noticing a troubling trend. Some young people who were mildly ill or had no noticeable coronavirus symptoms developed blood clots – and experienced strokes when those clots blocked blood vessels in the brain.

I wish more people around where I am would ask “how is this still a thing?” It at least means you can give them the answer, exactly like you just did, which might in turn give them something to think about. Instead what I see from most people is more like this kind of sentiment: “Of course it’s still a thing, it’s just how things are now. Really it’s always been like this. Colds happen, flu happens, covid happens. It’s a fact of life, get used to it and get over it being a thing. You’re still wearing a mask? What are you, some kind of hypochondriac who scrubs their hands raw every time someone sneezes?”
See my edit to the OP.
Wait did WhyEssEff say something too, are are you talking about @Awoo@hexbear.net’s post here?
oh, my bad. I see you meant this. Edit again: WhyEssEff is awesome, but I think she gets a lot wrong in that post. Not the least of which being the legality/illegality of the end users using or talking about these sites. And people talking about them is not what gets them taken down.
Those are copy cat sites. Fuck the Guardian but no, they’re not “lying.” Fmovies has been shut down for weeks now.
Yeah, I’ve seen stremio mentioned a lot as the best way to go. It was always just easier to to go a known website, enter in a title, then play the movie. But at this point, with the other options being a bit hit or miss, it might be time for me to stop being lazy and get to using stremio.
For the post?
Or for the news it brings?
In addition to that, fmovies being gone is old news. What’s new here is knowing what happened to it.
There is a difference between a mirror and a copycat site. This is not fake news.
When I go there, it still says
But yeah, hopefully it will be soon, so I’ll keep checking. We need more invidious instances, especially now when almost all the youtube frontends got wiped out.
