In the short term, a graphite lubricant like for locks will help a lot. Cheaper than a new bed. I would not use WD40 due to smell and greasy residue.

Doesn’t have to be geotextile - an old towel or a sheet folded double will do perfectly well to protect them. Sheets are lighter and don’t squash the plants as much as towels.

Wait until you get a rose thorn stabbing, and end up going to the doc for a penicillin injection. Which they administer with a sharpened hose pipe into your gluteus maximus. Rose thorns do gangrene really really well apparently. Learned my lesson from that experience and now wear gloves when I’m anywhere near roses. Does seem that they’re setting themselves up to fail - and each to have enough material to put the blame on the other.
