  • I enjoyed both. my gaming group definitely preferred Empyrion though. especially with the Reforged Eden mod.

I enjoyed building things in space engineers more due to the mechanical aspects. and the fact that you could program and automate things. I enjoyed the hell out of making a giant drill. and the vehicles you can build can do really cool things, check out the steam workshop for cool examples.

on the other hand, in Empyrion you actually get to use the vehicles. and they felt more like my own personalized ship. plus going from picking plants on the surface to launching into space is a great starting game loop. and then once in space you can do mining more easily than space engineers or just take out and scrap opposing ships. or trade is viable.
it can be challenging to get the initial materials required. it can also be unforgiving if you pick a fight above your pay grade, so make sure to save (and prioritize a shield). the building is not as complex, but that actually works for it. my buddy builds some mighty cool ships. I tended to get a cool ship from the workshop and then heavily modify it to make it my own, which is a fun feature.

The skill-shot way is to dodge and then wait for his little stop animation. If you hit him in the back of the leg it’ll do a temporary armor crack and then a second shot on that same leg within a few sec will kill it. you’ll notice a little flame on his leg that indicates you’ve hit the first shot correctly.

But the other suggested ways are easier to time, especially if there’s a lot of Chaos going on

  • the key phrase there being ‘more frequent’. the fast travel and character customization are all in the game and have a more in-universe integration. the game systems are supposed to be more immersive than just click the map and fast travel. you typically either take a cart from town to town or warp using a stone that gets used up.

I like it the way it is, makes leaving town to quest and adventure have another layer of strategy. If someone wants to bypass that strategy layer with money then so be it. I certainly would prefer that it be a mod rather than a MTX, and will definitely not be buying any regardless.

  • I tried one of these. cool concept, but execution was meh. Would be better with their external device thing that locks the screen in place.

Also, and YMMV, but it was the only VRish thing to make me nauseous (but not overly so) after a while due to the screen moving. I’ve flown jets in VR comfortably, but XCOM on the NReal was troublesome.

also you need a hub type thing to be able to charge the deck and use the glasses at the same time. not a big deal, but then the deck is pretty bulky
