  • While wanting to build an open-source alternative to a shit platform run by an evil company is a nice (even admirable) thought, unless you really think on the myriad 'why’s and 'how’s and come up with some sort very-high-level spec that’s more than 2 sentences long, this will most likely remain a thought. And not only that, a rather unoriginal one since I’m pretty sure there is at least 1 open-source LinkedIn replacement out there (checking https://github.com/awesome-selfhosted/awesome-selfhosted is usually a good starting point considering your goal of wanting co-ops to run their own instances). If there isn’t (or the others are just bad for whatever reasons) then maybe the community can start having real discussions for this.

If however your intention for posting this was to try and get work to organically start on an OSS LinkedIn clone started, then good luck. But “let’s make an OSS version of X/Y/Z” is basically the same as “let’s buy a bar” or “let’s start a band”, seldom do these thoughts lead to their desired outcomes.

  • Second week back at work after holidays and maybe my brain has started returning. I have an interesting H2 left.

Current obsession is being a coffee wanker (again), which has been fun and tasty and expensive

    sad part

boy howdy it’d be nice to have people to talk to that weren’t colleagues or my partner but i’d need interests that last for more than 2 weeks for that to be maintainable

  • I remember about ~10-15 years ago there were big issues with them acquiring massive amounts of central european forests. Trying to find recent stuff of that ilk and they seem significantly better (as far as I can get with english written articles and searches).

Like any massive retailer that is known for selling cheap things: check for local stores and second-hand first (if you can and feel comfortable doing so).

I’d be lying if i didn’t say the meatballs aren’t godly though.

  • I’ve been trying to not use Steam on linux for a while now unless necessary (I have too many games there). GoG + Heroic keeps me pretty sane. Otherwise it’s Lutris for starting them (which I’ll agree is VERY clunky but you can get things done). I think we’re actually getting over the hill of “Linux gaming means Steam” that we’ve been on since the SteamDeck launched.

While it’s working fine for now, what do I do if I’m offline and Steam decides this is one of those days offline mode doesn’t work? What if I get banned from Steam?

This is a pretty valid-ish concern I would say. It’s one of the reasons I’m using GoG mainly now (which yes, still buying licences so similar concerns just maybe not as great or maybe I’m kidding myself)

  • This whole article is great but the last section resonates with me pretty hard at work rn:

But I think the core of what pisses me off is that selling this magic machine requires selling the idea that doing things is worthless.

At work we’re being pushed to use Copilot because “you shouldn’t spend your time coding, you should spend it designing” (actual quote) and my guy, I enjoy coding and writing and doing things, not sending it off to the plagiarism-pollution machine
