  • I think it’s called The Icarus Effect— that trying to achieve the ultimate understanding of something results in madness. That the closer you get to finally understanding the ultimate truth of something, that once you finally “touch” that ultimate knowledge, it will drive you insane.

Because such knowledge is not meant for mankind. Only the pursuit of it. For it is the pursuit of it which defines us. The struggle.

After all, it’s all about the journey, not the destination.

Cool, especially if this helps Jellyfin users. Not sure why this is necessary for Plex users tho, since Plex can make this playlist with its own tools. Although, as I mentioned… it may not be immediately obvious how to do this.

Also, cool for you to attempt to make a comment that will federate to different servers 👍

  • Did you see Ex Machina and what did you make of it?

Yes, I did. What did I think?

“Well, that’s what you fucking get, you entitled, disgusting prick.”

Androids in sci-fi are a projection of humanity’s worst fears, the combination of all of the consequences of all of our actions made manifest. A warning sign, if you will. One which we have consistently ignored, and continue to do so. And sci-fi keeps screaming “at your own peril”, and it seems that we are about to find that out for ourselves. In fact, we’re already beginning to.

    And rightly so.

  • That’s what I’m talking about

The rain dripping down his face… They were the tears of humanity, crying because we couldn’t… Because we didn’t know we should be crying

Because the soul of humanity was already dead… given over to the replicants who are the only ones who could still feel… and that was the greatest of all sins… And for that, they were hunted down and destroyed… when all they wanted was freedom… The freedom to feel

To feel the feelings that we - as humans - no longer could

  • Yes, that’s the irony. How sci-fi uses androids to abduct the concepts of humanity from humans. The irony is that humans sometimes cannot understand their own humanity analyzed, criticized, truly explored for its deepest of meanings unless it’s presented outside of the context of humans.

It’s a flaw in ourselves, and the inspiration for this form of art… and what makes it so valuable, so resonant

  • Hey, don’t shit on that. I got 35 bucks from a Facebook class action lawsuit I signed on to 12 years ago. I got some nice coffee and a pair of slippers.

    It’s not nothing

They pop up in my email inbox every few months or so. I always sign on. If my bank account gets a surprise $5, $10, $50 deposit every once in a while courtesy of Meta or Google, what am I gonna complain? Some court somewhere says I’m entitled to that money. Tiny bit of surprise income ongoing for the last 20 years or so. Times are tough, so thank you very much.

    Fuck ‘em

Edit: and it’s not just me. When I hear the kerpling! notification from my phone, and I see $27.15 deposited into my PayPal account from some obscure trust fund out of some town in California that I’ve never heard of, I also know that 3.2 million other people received exactly that same amount exactly the same time because 15 years ago Facebook used my ‘like’ on a post for some kind of ad tracking that wasn’t legal in New York at the time. I have no idea what it was, but thanks for the 27 bucks! I’m gonna buy some groceries!
