14·1 day agoI can hold out on not buying a new car a hell of a lot longer than the American economy can survive under a tariff regime.

Fuck Cars@lemmy.world•18 speed cameras just went up in Oakland, California. The cameras will ticket drivers that exceed the speed limit by 11 miles an hour or more.English
8·1 day agoSpeed camera ticket fees should go solely to servicing the municipal bonds issued to pay for road diets, and if you’re bringing in more ticket fees than you have bonds to pay then you need to issue more bonds to pay for more road diets.

231·1 day agoSpeed cameras always end up devolving into a petty political football that creates more opposition and resentment than harm prevention. If you need to consider speed cameras at all, it means you definitely have an infrastructure design issue. That’s where both the attention and the money should be going.

2026 might not hold much good in store but at least we made it to the releases of both Frieren season 2 and Jojos season 6.
Just like Marx himself, I feel that today we woefully underestimate capitalism’s capability to endlessly adapt itself to changing material and political conditions.
Like, I was about to make the joke “The first part will definitely happen” to imply that the second part will only happen with a lot of effort on our part. But now that I’m thinking about it… Neither of these things will happen without a lot of effort on our part. And even then, probably not in our lifetimes.

5·1 day agoOh you sweet summer child.
Sorry, couldn’t help myself. I want to share your optimism, but I have a feeling that there are a whole series of stopgaps escalating in level of absurdity between middle class Americans not being able to afford new cars and middle class Americans actually demanding public transit by visible majority. Gonna get badder before it gets gooder.

8·2 days agoAnd with a minimum of three more years of this, they will eventually get what they want. There is no way that this administration ends without the US military acting against domestic Americans, at some point. It is going to happen.
As much as I’m tempted to play the accellerationist and demand that we give them what they’re asking for, I know that we can’t rip off the bandaid like that. Americans are not yet mentally prepared to take up arms against their government. The government will strike first, after they exhaust all attempts to get the people to make the first move. Trump needs martial law or some equivalent immunity before his time in the Oval Office is up.
Our best bet might be that Trump dies of a blood clot, Vance is too unlikable to hold the tenuous fascist truces together, and the momentum falls apart.

3·2 days agoHis family is his wife Iris Weinshall, Rudy Giuliani’s Transportation Commissioner. Notorious for suing the city in 2011 to try and force the removal of the flagship two-way protected bike lane on Prospect Park West. She’s currently the COO of the New York Public Library (Mamdani has been mayor for nearly a month and the NYPL leadership page still lists Adams as mayor. Ironic, he spent a lot of energy trying to destroy NYPL).

4·3 days agoThe conservative fallacy that the sum of all positives and negatives in the world is always zero, therefore good cannot be had by all and must always be had at someone else’s expense.

Because they’re fed lies and projection that those people are coming to ruin their way of life. And it’s very hard to undo all of that reinforcement, a lot of dissonance and regret and introspection to navigate if they do along with all the inevitable lifestyle change required to leave that environment. That’s why even the ones who admit they made a bad call, will usually only cite the consequences to themselves and their family. If they ever come around to actual stranger empathy it will be at least another year or two later.
