I feel you there bro. Sometimes, when I’m creating a piece of music, I get to a point where, I’m just not making any progress, I’ll step of for a piece, let it simmer for a bit. Same with servers in general for me. It’s the reason I have a test server and have, in the past, leaned a bit heavily on a few backups. LOL! I can screw something up quick when I’m frustrated. The reward for me is learning something new. It’s a rewarding and useful hobby for me. among others.

Not really. I have everything set the way I want it and it’s stable. On occasion, I’ll see a container that catches my fancy, so I’ll spin it up on a test server, dick around with it, and monitor it before I ever decide to put it on my production server. On occasion I’ll have to fix, or adjust something. Most of the time I’m just enjoying it. I wouldn’t say I was running anything super complex tho.

As far as time, I’ve got you beat there most likely. Used to be lickity-split, but then you get old, things slow down. LOL Also, there is only one user…me. I realize you have family, but my hard and fast rule is: Multiple users cause issues, so I don’t share. I’d say, go spend your time with the family. That’s the most important.

I’m with you on the incomplete guides. There always seem to be that one ‘secret’ ingredient’ that just didn’t get documented. And to the devs of the opensource software, me love you long time, but please include a screenshot.

The very first Linux server I ever stood up got whacked. I got a nastygram from my host that he had shut it down because of malicious activity against other servers. So, from their standpoint, I can understand why. I mean it sucks that you have downtime, but downtime happens to even the big guys. Hope you get it sorted.

Sure, I understand gaming the system. I have tracks on SoundCloud, and the same economy exists there too. I just do it for fun tho, I’m not interested in any monetary or commercial pursuits. It seems to me tho, that a relatively small number of accounts doing massive scraping would raise an eyebrow or two, no? Roughly, the average a 320 kbps audio track would be around 8 MB +/-, which gives you 10,616,832+/- tracks. Damn!

I came across this thread searching Lemmy for another query, and it intrigued me. How does 81 TB of data get scraped without Spotify knowing? That seems like a server administration failure on a large scale. I mean, 81 TB is nothing to dismiss offhand. OTOH, they are probably burning through petabytes daily, but still. IT: ‘I wonder why these few accounts are downloading TB’s of data, daily?’

I run the Suricata package in pFsense which I would say is kissing cousins to Snort. It actually does work very well. In fact, on occasion, too well. I’d rather that that just having my jimmy hanging out in traffic. I also employ the pfblockerng’s massive feed lists, and Tailscale packages on the standalone pFsense firewall, and a VPN on all devices. Network so tight they call it virgin. LOL Not really, but I tend to go a bit overboard on security measures.

I am very politically active. I do calling campaigns, protest, vote, march, et al. I don’t think the majority of people here are giving you grief about advocacy. Scanning back through the thread, I get the impression that what people are trying to get you to understand is that personally identifiable information is not something you take lightly.

I received a letter the other week telling me that a medical firm that houses my data, was breached. The hackers potentially got SSN, names, addresses, and a fist full of other data. They are offering me free life time credit scanning security services in a bid not to be sued in court by hundreds of thousands of people en masse. This is a multi billion dollar corporation, not some selfhosted mini server running fail2ban. So there are serious ramifications when it comes to personal data being leaked, and if it happens on your server, you are liable.
