Fight Club 5/5 - Saw this at a local independent cinema while getting drunk. It’s still pretty great and relevant

Tony 3/5 - I don’t really have any exposure to Anthony Bourdain and I find it a little implausible that all of this happened over the time frame that the movie suggests. Still, he was a compelling character and I particularly like the wordless conversation that happens towards the end of the clam bake

Over Your Dead Body 3.5/5 - Missed this in theaters but saw it streaming at home. It’s funny, but gets a little over gorey towards the end of the movie. I’m growing a little tired of “breaking a knee the wrong way” as a comedic device. I’ve seen at least 3 new releases this year that use it

Best Little Whorehouse in Texas 5/5 - I had never seen this before and saw it at a charity screening for the Imagination Library. I wasn’t fully on board when the gayest football team I’ve ever seen attempted to convince me they were excited to sleep with women, but when the governer showed up and had a whole song and dance about how much he loved to not do his job I was in. Apparently the general outline of the story is largely true!

In terms of difficulty it goes:

Master Quest (N64)>Master Quest (3DS)>Original (N64)>Original (3DS)

Master Quest is mechanically more difficult with additions to some fights and changes to the items. The 3DS versions are easier than N64 primarily because they modernize the controls in a way that involves less fucking around with menus but also some quality of life improvements (namely the iron boots)

As to how much of the Original vs Master Quest will be in the new game? Hard to say. I would expect that the new game keeps the core dungeons and temples but within them expands the scope while also adding more mini games and probably a few new areas and side quests. Assuming it follows a normal Nintendo remake pattern

I like it but I have a lot of nostalgia attached to it. I imagine given the average demographic of this website you’d find it relatable, but the humor might be a little 2010s internet dated for current tastes

Coyote vs. Acme 4.5/5 - I’m really glad this got out of studio hell. The themes about corporations ignoring consumers, the comfort of habit vs embracing the future, and the value of working hard even for no reward are all very timely and I would suspect part of why this had a hard time getting to theaters. It’s really funny, touching, and definitely worth seeing

Rounders 4/5 - I liked the characters and story in this quite a bit. My minor gripe is that like most poker movies it has too many scenes where the pivotal hand is something that rarely happens in poker, though at least nobody won with a royal flush at any point

Justice League: War 3.5/5 - Pretty good for the DCAU, it’s got a full cast, doesn’t do much for origin stories and quickly has the action start. Green Lantern repeatedly getting his shit rocked is very funny

All the President’s Men, Spotlight, Shattered Glass, Capote would be examples I’d use. They’re going to be movies that largely take place in news rooms or follow journalism

This chart confuses me. First off the lines for each movie are weirdly high. Second, the color gradient is clearly to make this look pretty instead of readable. Third reality TV and talk show having low movie counts makes sense but 3 movies that are “game show” movies? Just off the top of my head Slumdog Millionaire, The Luckiest Man in America, The Running Man, Death Race, and Gamer are all game show movies. So I’m not sure how they’re sorting this. I also probably wouldn’t include any genres that don’t have enough movies to make sure you have a good sample

Wet Hot American Summer 4/5 - This was actually my first time seeing this and it was pretty crazy to see a cast that was just absolutely stuffed with comedy legends. Definitely a stoner movie but once I got on board with it being stupid I had a great time

It Ends 4/5 - Pretty good for a mystery movie. It felt like another response to covid and was impressive with what they accomplished on a small budget. Liminal indie horror is in!

The 36th Chamber of Shaolin 4/5 - Really solid Hong Kong kung-fu

Mike & Nick & Nick & Alice 3/5 - Intentionally circuitous like a lot of time travel movies but it splits the difference between fighting, crime, comedy, and sci-fi. It had a moment where it does each of those well, but none of those moments coinicide. Also the ending is meh

Super Troopers 3 3.5/5 - It’s better than 2, though that’s not a high bar to clear. I imagine this could be really funny if they wrote more new jokes and stopped repeating the best joke from the first one for a third time

The End of Oak Street 3.5/5 - The best Jurassic movie in a long ass time. I liked dinosaurs being absolutely ruthless and the “modernized” interpretation of dinosaurs that Jurassic Park has locked themselves out of doing. I have a specific gripe about the very end of the movie that’s a spoiler:

There is nothing crazy about this. Plenty of movies rerun the previous ones to hype up the new one and make more money. Avatar, Mission: Impossible, Dune, Mean Girls (which had actually been brought back to theaters multiple times) and Beetlejuice all did it too. It’s also in the same year they had a movie make 2 billion dollars, of course they want to continue the momentum. Finally, people want this, there’s a lot of hype for this

Basically the plot of Crash (1996)

It’s been years since I was on dating apps but I’m hardly shocked. I got plenty of bumble matches and I’m pretty certain I never exchanged more than 5 messages on the app. The vast majority of women simply never sent a first message or the rare ones that did hit me with “hi” or “hey” which is honestly worse than having me initiate the conversation because I have to awkwardly respond and start a conversation. It’s a fun idea in theory, but reality is a real slap in the face

Spider-Man: Brand New Day 3/5 - After the last movie brought in all of the people associated with Spider-Man I knew this was going to have to tone everything down and it did. It’s a good Spider-Man movie with an interesting villain, better than most of the MCU stuff right now

Ice Cream Man (2026) 1.5/5 - It’s in the splatter horror genre like Terrifier which I’ve found to be disappointing in general. Usually there’s an emphasis on over the top gore but it often comes around to being cartoonish because it’s so unrealistic and that’s the case here. Add in AI scenes, child sexualization, and vague racism and there’s not much redeemable here

The Hobbit (1977) 2.5/5 - Watched this in honor of the new magic set. It’s goofy as hell, but has a lot of hand drawn charm. It’s been a long time since I read The Hobbit but if you told me all the songs in the movie were from the book I’d believe it. The Gollum scene drags on for far too long, but overall I appreciate it as being pretty faithful, if not abridged

Heat 4/5 - My first time seeing this and it was pretty good. I think an hour of build-up and character building is on the long side for what the movie needed, and the heist itself was a little simplistic for my tastes. Overall still very well executed

SOULM8TE 2.5/5 - If you’re going to rip off movies like Companion and Ex Machina you gotta do something to differentiate yourself, and the opportunity was right there considering this is (supposedly) in the M3GAN universe. They don’t really bother taking advantage of the crossover and while there are some interesting kills and funny moments, overall they don’t really capitalize on the premise

The Dink 4/5 - What if we made Challengers palatable for Republicans? I jest, it’s funny, pretty self aware, and manages just enough swerves to keep you engaged. I appreciated that the main character was a fucking moron and that they never redeem that. He is just so dumb. Also John McEnroe is fucking hilarious in every movie he’s in

They had a pretty limited musical run (and a 1 season IFC show) but Garfunkel and Oates had some funny songs
