The fucking Collisons again! I guess they’ve given up on building their own city in Northern California now they realise they can just awe politicians into giving them money and doing what they want.
The BT Young Scientist Competition was a mistake

the donkey people may not have picked their cause because it was the most rational, but that doesn’t seem to have stopped them from coming up with good ideas. it’s almost as if people can be more effective when they’re working for causes they’re emotionally connected to…

I got so much use out of xcancel. I feel bad now that I never donated €5 or something

I have now clicked around some donkey sanctuary websites and am starting to feel emotional. I am sure this is what rationalists are afraid of but God the donkeys…

I’m getting the urge to give some cash to a donkey sanctuary. Does anyone know a good one

One of the members of a “wizard rock” band later went on to be in an actually good band. But as far as I am aware, this has only happened once.

I’m not necessarily an animal lib person, but I think an animal rights/animal liberation/ethical vegan framework for looking after and respecting animals is probably better than an EA one. If only because they’re more experienced in creating social change. Apparently only about 1 to 3% of Americans are vegans. So they have the numbers over the EAs, and they could probably beat them in a fight too.

Top comment:
The responsibility probably rests on the rationalists here. People become professionals all the time (and indeed, maximizing impact often requires being a professional), but well under 1% of the population has the personality to ever become a rationalist.
Only 144,000 people will go to heaven!

The movement against nuclear power was significantly helped along by the movement against nuclear weapons, which was particularly potent at the height of the cold war. AI freaks seem to hold a certain amount of contempt for the left? Which gets in the way of spreading their message. And in any event their message is “eugenics” which isn’t likely to be received well on the left these days

The idea that the owners of HP would let a critical parody be published for profit (even if that profit would be donated to a UK charity) was naive at best. There’s no “it’s for charidee” protection for copyright law. You’re right, it does indicate how distant he was from those communities, how little he knew about the history of fandom, and how little he cared about how his actions might affect them.

Seems like Yud saw fanfiction as an arena he could advertise in and recruit from, not a community he was participating in. Hence he used all the tricks to get as many hits and reviews as possible.

He has a page on TV Tropes too, but it’s much shorter
E: HPMoR also has a page.
They should try doing the Harlem Shake next
Why are they trapped in 2014 making parody music videos

What a twat. “It’s much harder to bullshit people than to be rigorous and skeptical guys. Not only is everything fine, I’m actually a better person than ALL my critics”

Yeah, that is really depressing.
I think it’s a sunk cost thing for the authors, but also it could be fear of coming off as “disgruntled” to people they’re hoping to communicate with. They still have hope of changing these communities, but they know these communities are very hostile and dismissive towards any criticism, especially criticism from perceived “enemies”. They also don’t want to lose whatever power and respect they have in those communities. So emphasising how great these groups are and how smart all the members are and how much they got out of being a member is a tactic to try and get around all that hostility. They want to flatter the remaining members enough that they’ll retain their respect for them. Which in itself is a sad comment on the attitudes common in these communities.
Having said all that, the poor man is not long out of a cult and has taken a big step by publicly blowing the whistle. That takes some backbone.
I’m not sure I understand what you mean by this:
He seems to have spent a lot of time on early tumblr, but young lefty activist women horrified him. I don’t think anyone explained that people are nicer in person and volunteering in person is a great way to fall in love.
Could you explain?
What about the article where she claims that based on their art, a contemporary artist “wants to fuck their dog” and the primary reason art galleries aren’t making this more clear is…because under woke you’re not allowed to sexualize disabled artists???
