politics @lemmy.world•Pam Bondi’s portrait already taken down at Justice Department
1·2 hours agoIs there some customary period for it to stay up after someone is fired?
My wife is overly careful, like this. It goes to weird extremes at times. She will say things like “is there the possibility that you would be physically capable of leaving work early to pick up a package for me?” She’s trying very very hard to be clear that she’s interrogating what’s possible, not making a direct request or demand. This is where the “physically capable” thing comes in.
My reaction is always the same: “Dear, you can ask me to do stuff - just ask.”
Isn’t it almost universal that as long as resources are plentiful, organisms drift toward larger sizes?

World News@lemmy.world•World loses patience with Trump as war no longer just about IranEnglish
4·18 hours agoSanctions against the U.S. will, of course, not happen.
It would be more productive for the rest of the world to reduce its dependence on the US. This dependence takes a variety of forms and degrees but it’s this very dependence which makes sanctions impractical. It’s this very dependence which emboldens jackasses like Trump.
So just divest. Disentangle. If we could get there then there might actually be something we could do about a problem like Trump.
As things stand, it takes forever and a day to gather the will to merely speak out.

Showerthoughts@lemmy.world•It's wild to see people in real time learning that war is bad and civilians die a lot. As if contemporary wars are the only ones that have had mass civilian casualties. Shit is horrific always.

271·1 day agoYou’re starting to get it. Politics is not just a very boring television channel. It’s power transactions at the highest levels and it affects basically every thing. To even be able to whine about having to pay attention to politics is a great privilege.

politics @lemmy.world•Trump says government should stop funding Medicare, daycare to focus on war
5·3 days agoAs long as Trump is just going to fabricate stuff and lie to our faces, maybe next time he can just invent the entire war effort itself and not actually drop a single bomb. “We’ve destroyed China. No one’s ever seen anything like it. Totally obliterated.”

1·4 days agoLet’s say this life is all you get: wouldn’t you also do a million things to stay healthy and live longer, which most people do not do?
We invented the afterlife because it’s hard to deal with the fact that life is sometimes nasty, brutish, and short. Death is pretty hard to face too. So we lie to ourselves and each other about it. Simple as that.

Don’t worry, Chief, I don’t even expect logic from religion, so don’t try.

I’m on great terms with my wife and make my own fucking breakfast. These things may in fact be related.
