The older videos explicitly tested early alpha and beta versions. Meanwhile it is already released as official version with their distribution. Off course there might be quirks (like KDE has in example), but its ready for productive use.

Probably depends on the species. You did not specify human, so we have to assume its alien.
You probably meant “DE” instead “IDE” (i was confused first, but think its a typo). You should look in YouTube videos to get an idea of what it is and how it works. I would say, its something GNOME 3 inspired by its look and design, but with functionality and customization inspired by KDE. Some parts might be still under cooked, as it is still early. The question is, why do you want change from KDE? This information would be crucial to give a recommendation. And only you can answer it. Maybe try it out in a virtual machine before committing installation on your main system.

Programming@programming.dev•Sudo maintainer, handling utility for more than 30 years, is looking for support
2·7 hours agoWrong. In example Valve is putting money and work into FOSS. AND they make money of it and rely on it. Even Microsoft does contribute to Open Source, believe it or not, even is one of the top sponsors for Linux.

6·7 hours agoHow is the free part not working? FOSS is the cure of the industry. Or do you think Adobe and Microsoft is working that great? Imagine if we didn’t have FOSS…

Steam Hardware@sopuli.xyz•Official Valve: Steam Hardware Launch timing (Q1/Q2 of 2026) and other FAQs

5·7 hours agoWell any game or launcher or emulator have to support the controller or type of controller. In example Valve cannot guarantee that all functionality (like the trackpads and motion controls) are supported elsewhere.

13·7 hours agoBut they answered the question. Valve can only guarantee that games are compatible with Steam Overlay compatible games. They don’t want to commit to a “yes” or “no” for stuff outside Steam, and then be liable for that answer if it does not work as advertised and then get sued to the ground. So you cannot blame them.
I don’t know on Windows, but on Linux you most likely can use the controller to play on any game. It’s just not supported and guaranteed by Valve.

Steam Hardware@sopuli.xyz•Official Valve: Steam Hardware Launch timing (Q1/Q2 of 2026) and other FAQs
5·8 hours agoI purchased mine for full price too. Unfortunately I do not like it for various reasons. Missing dpad and second stick, and holding it is a bit uncomfortable to my hands. And at the early days Steam Input wasn’t this refined. But I loved using it to play with gyro controls. But will keep it, its history. :-)
The new controller is based on the Steam Deck controls and vastly superior to me (if we assume its like that). I can’t imagine you don’t liking it as much as the old controller.

1·10 hours agoTo be honest, I think the forums in Steam are a good addition, and worth having it. And in my opinion every game store should have such a community feature builtin.

6·10 hours agoSome of us have already been burned by EPIC and we aren’t going back.
First they took Linux support away from my Rocket League and then completely away from Steam. I don’t know how the current state is, but that was a huge burn for me. There are and were other issues too, this is just the one I am most angry about.

Not entirely the same, if the drivers are builtin into the Linux Kernel. I don’t know if the Steam Controller drivers will be Open Source, so maybe its the same.
