So, I have a project that’s nearing completion of phase I. I have some stupidly expensive books that I’ve owned since the mid-80s:

    pics of the books

The Hobbit (Deluxe Edition) Lord of the Rings (Deluxe Edition) Poems and Stories (Deluxe Edition)

The books themselves are in very good shape, especially when you consider the sheer number of times I’ve moved since buying them, not to mention the nearly 16 years of storage in someone’s garage (in another waterproof box). Not quite mint, but very close. (Yes I actually read them. I just value these books enough that I’m super-careful with them.) The boxes–especially the lids–are, however, in far rougher shape. They did their job. They protected the books, but they took a lot of damage in the process:

For the last three weeks I’ve been working on restoring the books. Phase I consists of repairing broken corners and reinforcing them on the inside with home-made corner protectors and on the outside with metal corner protectors of the variety seen on old-timey wood chests and the like. This weekend I will have finished Phase I (pics forthcoming if interested) and I must say, it looks really spiffy with these faux-bronze fancy corner pieces. Then comes Phase II and repairing all the scuffed and torn edges, getting them blackened, put back into their proper shape, and then protected (with microcrystalline black wax) from further erosion. (I’ve already done some test runs of this and results have been promising, but I’m still working on technique.)

Don’t know why, but I wanted to talk about it. Maybe get tips from people with more experience at this sort of thing.

Fucking gutted. Looked into emigrating to Canada as a social worker it looked positive. Had a meeting with a solicitor to be told to forget it cos I’m too old and single. FFS 40s nowadays isn’t like 40s decades ago when these rules were written I’ll be working another 20 years or so! And me being single doesn’t mean I’m worth less.

    Hugs appreciated
