When asked in interview, Carney is operating under the assumption that this is for Israel and Gaza and the documented peace process. He’s playing dumb to buy more time and less ire. I don’t like it but it’s a strategy that’s worked for him so far.

I reluctantly agree. It would feel good to call out the bully and put him in his place but it would be irresponsible for the PM to do so without a fully implemented exit strategy.
Yeah, in fact if I were him I’d be finding every opportunity to change my mind, indicate soft commit then withdraw then change my mind again, say I’m still thinking about it, insist that other items are ahead of it that need to be resolved first, just generally do every type of sabotage of the decision and discourse, no matter how minor. I would lie and withhold any info until it was absolutely necessary to let the public and the press know. Work deals in the backrooms. Find a small team of like minded people who understand what needs to be done clandestinely here.
I would be shocked if this wasn’t Carney’s approach right now. Which will piss off all of the CPC armchair MPs that hate him and seem to be following the Trump political playbook up here. They are on a need to know basis, as we all are, but they are going to take it particularly poorly, you can be sure, egged on by their hyperpartisan whiny opposition leader.
It doesn’t cost us anything to join it as Carney has ruled out paying into it. And it clearly makes the orange moron happy and distracted.
Doesn’t cost Canada financially, that’s true. Yet it costs the international community’s institutions in power, since an alternative is being acknowledged, and probably even Canada in reputation, in the long run.
Harper already ruined our reputation and Trudeau didn’t really repair it, just stopped the freefall degredation of it.
Yes, this hurts our rep just by joining it, but as its basically a “let Trump pretend he is king of the world” club its not an issue until he tries to use it to pressure us somehow.

Yet they have accepted the temporary membership. They are there with Kazakhstan, Hungary and a few others.
It’s almost certainly better to be on the board to see what’s going on and influence it if possible. It’s definitely not worth paying a billion dollars for a seat, but until we have more details, better to join now and have the option to leave later.
I haven’t heard a lot of people talking about it. I think, in general, Canadians have been impressed with Carney and respect his intellect and political skills. I think there’s a common feeling that they’ll go along with his descisions with guarded expectation.
I have been impressed as well. I am only trying to understand a move I instinctually do not agree with.

I think it’s a pretty fluid situation. Carney is being optimistic and wants the appearance of playing along. But I’m pretty sure if this thing devolves into horseshit, you’ll see Canada quietly back off. As is kind of our way.
It has indeed been phrased in different ways, but to me it is already big news that Canada is even considering it, given the repercussions it may have.
