Notes:
- Threadiverse is Piefed, Lemmy, and Mbin. Fediverse only accounts for listed software [17], not the other [112] software tracked by Fediverse-Observer.
- Fediverse-Observer provides daily MAU back to 20221130. FediDB only provides a current snapshot (snapshot within the last 15 minutes, no time series data) and only tracks some of the software [67].
- FediDB seems to use unclear math to get there counts and overestimate the MAU on most software (see previous post, if interested in learning more).
Dogbone it. Around July 1st I’ll have been a member of the Fediverse for 3yrs, and my dumb arse still doesn’t really understand what most of the other pillars of the FV are.
PF & Lemmy I think of as being heavily connected, and similar software, with Mbin being a 3rd wheel that I don’t actually see as a PF user.
Mastodon is like Twitter, and if I use hashtags then at least they can see content I post. NodeBB is like traditional forum software, but I’ve no idea if there’s a way for it to be visible. Pixelfed is like Imgur, and Peertube is like YT?
And there lies the extent of my pitifully small knowledge. T_T
Haha. I know the feeling. If you want to feel it worse, go to fediverse-observer site and look at all the Fediverse platforms/software (like 150+).
I just looked into and it seems Mbin communities/magazines do federate to the rest of the Threadiverse. So you can interact with their communities (they don’t have many though). The 3rd wheel bit you may be alluding to is interaction with Mastodon. It seems Mastodon has some federation with the Threadiverse, but to my knowledge Piefed and Lemmy users can’t interact with Mastodon users on Mastodon (only if the Mastodon user post/comment in the Threadiverse).
I’ve heard Pixelfed is closer to Instagram, but I don’t use any of the three to know for sure.
Yeah, Peertube is like YT. Some channels have federated with the Threadiverse (ex. TheLinuxChannel).
NodeBB also has some federation onto the Threadiverse. I’ve seen maybe two different forums show up and they seemed to be different Fediverse devs posting and commenting.
