I stay up late because AuDHD makes it difficult to switch activities.

I can’t get up from bed without it taking 5 hours, nor I can go to sleep without it taking 5 hours.

    Everything takes 5 hours

It is surprising how much more one manages in a day by just waking up earlier instead of going to bed later, even when the hours are the same

While I’m more on the night owl side especially after becoming a parent. The few times in my life when I have woken up before life starts, to witness the sunrise have been amazing.

Hmm, I’ve never thought about it that way, though I do frequently feel like I need to stay up late cause I didn’t have enough me time.

You stay up late because of that, I stay up late because of the anxiety of the upcoming day with exactly these things.

    There’s a meme in there somewhere 😂

I’ve always just blamed it on insomnia, but I wonder if this is part of the root cause.

That and 24 hours just doesn’t seem like enough time to accommodate our circadian rhythm… not as in we’re too busy to squeeze it all in, but like being conscious for long enough to actually be tired enough to sleep soundly, then do that for a full 8 hours, would take like 32 hours total. Being that we’re stuck in a 24 hour cycle, sleep is the easier chunk to sacrifice.

…or mandatory chunk to sacrifice if your insomnia is as bad as mine…

WTB some magic thruster to face against the Earth’s rotation, and slow that bitch down by about 25%.

I was describing this exact thing to a friend a few weeks ago. My sleep cycle is trying to naturally push forward several hours every day because I’ve got too much conscious energy for a typical 16/8. 8 hours is a nice amount if sleep, but I need it on a 22/8 cycle instead.

I felt like a crazy person describing it, but now I feel less alone. Thank you stranger.

I think it’s actually pretty common, just not commonly discussed. I suspect people who are “night owls” and “ugh, not a morning person” are pretty much all dealing with this.

I wonder if any sleep clinic/study folks have looked into this… it’d be a hard hypothesis to test… maybe like the Navy could run an experiment on one of its submarines - iirc they run on a 24 hour operations cycle, but all the lighting is synthetic. Adjusting that and the meal schedule /etc could put them in a unique position to really find the optimal wake-sleep duration and ratio.

        /shrug.

I stay up late cause I work nights and on my days off it’s the only time I get to game, lol. I’m a married man, y’all know how it goes. 😅

Yes! It’s so calm and quiet at night. I can think freely and do whatever it is I feel that I may need to.

For me, I get up early, 0400 or so. No one is about then and it’s very peaceful. I sit on the step and let the quiet soak into me.
