She did 8+8, which is 16, then 4 + 0, which is 4 and then 2+2=4. She did the first step and now has to add 1 and 4 and pull down the other numbers to get the result.

Pretty much textbook, I’d say. I mean, it’s very slow and you can skip the intermediate step she did, but it’s not wrong. Seeing how we don’t know the context of the picture, she might be doing the slow, step-by-step way on purpose (for educational reasons) or she’s just not that proficient (anymore).

Either way, looks like a perfectly valid (so far incomplete) attempt to me.

Especially if used in educational media, the 1 and 4 should be in a single column and different rows in order to maintain the method that’s used in the first place, and produce a lower rate of accidental errors.

That is true, that would be better. And yet, without more context, I fail to recognize her attempt to be so far off that it’s definitely, 100% obvious that she has made the egregious error that the meme implies.

Ok, that settles it. That’s the context I was not getting from the picture alone. Guess I just wanted to give her the (now proven to be 100% wasted) benefit of the doubt lol

I would have put the 1 in the “10’s” column, I.e. above the 4. Then you add 1+4+0 to get 5 in your answer row for that column. Cant believe I’m writing this. Do they not teach it that way anymore?

You are right, that is a small mistake. And we can agree on that formatting error and that it can lead to accidental errors with disastrous consequences. But I just don’t see enough evidence for the memes assumption that she completely missed the mark there.

As for how this is taught in school nowadays, I’ve got no idea. They should do it the way you described it though.
