Perchance I can join the list 🥺?👉👈

In all seriousness: how did they think it was a good idea to create a blacklist when a sizable chunk of the Fediverse is so against external interference in general? Did they not see this coming?

Have you checked the Dubvee ban logs? You might have been banned there years ago with even knowing it. Without even having known that instance existed. If that will make you feel any better. Happened to me. Through some weird automated ban sync process. Now I’ve learned the Dubvee admin is the tesseract dev who did all this, I didn’t even bother checking if I’m on the list. I’m feeling pretty hipster about all this.

Tesseract was a frontend for lemmy. Think of lemmy posts as emails, and the front end as your email client like outlook/gmail/etc. Normally you would expect your email client to show you your emails. But tesseract basically implemented a shadow ban list on users, communities, and phrases. And all of this was invisible to the server admins who hosted the tesseract frontend for their users. If you were banned by tesseract then people using that front ends just wouldn’t see your post’s, but you wouldn’t show as banned in the tesseract UI. In the email example this is the equivalent of your gmail seeing you said “fuck ice” a year ago and now it’ll let you send emails but not actually deliver them for people to read. But it wasn’t just “fuck ice” it was a whole bunch of things like criticizing moderators, left and right wing ideas. And GirlsFrontline (anime style game) was banned but not porn. Just weird. And it did all of this by loading the ban list as obfuscated code at runtime so just zero transparency all around.

If someone wanted to make a less extreme lemmy then they could be open about their front end goals and not try to hide it like a punk ass bitch

        Here’s their full explanation: https://lemmy.world/post/49817942

It’s pretty long and includes some insightful details about implementation (making the blocklist’s usage at the discretion of the instance admin though not transparent of its contents and defaulting it to enabled) but this quote boils down the underlying sentiment pretty well:

“These are all rough edges of the threadiverse which I am attempting to round off so we might actually be able to retain some level headed people instead of scraping the bottom of the barrel by being a dumping ground for people rejected by civil society."

When you examine the list, by and large, it’s pretty reasonable. Lots of false news, state propaganda, spammers, etc. But also the entire lemmy.blahaj.zone instance (where many of lemmy’s trans denizens call home). We’re included in what the lead developer describes as “bottom of the barrel” “people rejected by civil society.”

Though I do fear the backlash. You’ve got a bunch of malicious spammers, hate-mongers and blackhat state actors who now have an open window to cause a lot of harm (harassment & general sowing of discontent) with the convenient smoke screen of upset trans folks who it can be blamed on.

I’ll give a short description of the long post.

          big fuckin baby

also, I have to call him not just a dumbass but a malicious dumbass.

“Someone leaked the list. Why am I on it??”

A: The list was never hidden just not advertised (lest people game it). I also could have encrypted it, but I merely compressed it for efficiency. If you’re on the list, then one of the 10 reasons above applies.

the file in question was placed obscurely. updated without directly calling out what it was. and published without notifying users.

seems a lot of effort went into obfuscating the true purpose of the file.

while on the subject of obfuscation. he claimed he “compressed it for efficiency”.

he compressed it, then base64 encoded it. why? why compress it to only expand the size of the file by encoding it??

@ptz@dubvee.org is a dumbass and a shitty dev if he thinks any of the bullshit he said was worth the time it took to say it.

They posted an explanation in the tesseract community, but it boils down to they want the fediverse to succeed and replace reddit, but there is a contingent of toxic users that they feel is hindering that goal so they precompiled a list for new instance admins.

It’s fully optional and can easily be disabled in the UI

It is not fully optional. It was obfuscated and unremovable. That’s why the backlash has been so severe.

Not to mention, why should a user interface make that decision? That’s up to individual server admins and their userbase.

honestly I don’t even give a fuck about me being on “the list” anymore. I’m more upset that he decided for hundreds if not thousands of users without consulting them or taking into consideration of their opinions.

he took the choice away from them, and that’s kind of the problem with tech anymore.

@ptz@dubvee.org is a scammy piece of shit that got caught and is attempting to do damage control now.

I mean, to be fair, here is that entire paragraph for context:

As will be explained further, there are 10 rules that are enforced, the biggest one being a very basic “don’t be a violent extremist”. That’s probably 30% of the list. Another 50% are just alts of Dwazou (persistent, long-term ban evader), and the remaining 20% just garden-variety spammers and toxic people who scare the normies away.

Based on this, it is much more likely that you are an alt of Dwazou. (Or maybe I am? 🤪 Statistically, between the three of us, you me and the author, ONE of us must be!!)

THAT list is able to be disabled, though people are mad about its discoverability and transparency.

The OTHER list, the smaller instance-level one, reportedly cannot be disabled, seemingly the only recourse for those instances on it are to use his fork of the code.

This is from db0’s reporting, I have not attempted to confirm personally, but I would be happy to be corrected if need be.

The first person I looked up had an extremely inflammatory slogan as their cover picture. The sentiment was anti-israel, so I expect most people here, including myself, at least broadly (possibly wholeheartedly) agree with his general stance, but I think such slogans are wrong and unhelpful so… yeah.

Sometimes you are just going to piss people off no matter what. Shit lemmy grew as the 2024 election in the U.S. grew. If users from the U.S. weren’t bitching about politics or calling others names… Then we probably deserve the current state

Wow. I had no idea this was going on. Well…

If the author of the code, who was distributing it for free, wants to pick and choose who gets to run said code, then one is welcome to a refund of $0.00, I guess.

…y’know, I feel like, hypothetically, if I made a list of ‘bad people’ and used it to control access to software made available to the general public, that would put me in a fair bit of hot water. If it doesn’t count as targeted harassment, it still creates a literal set of targeting data that anyone else can pick up and harass.

But one way or another, i don’t think it’s very constructive for me to to continue to exist within the vicinity of someone who hates me. even vicariously through their code. just kinda stings is all…

It made me wonder if he didn’t get the list from the largest instance he’s a user on? I’m telling you, they do some curating of the content over there. It happened to me and that’s why I’m SJW.

It’s not who gets to run it, but who they get to interact with that’s the bad part, without even telling them makes it worse.

Using software made by people who hate you and are willing to put that hate into their code is a bad idea for sure. If their software seeks to isolate you from communities and people that believe you have a right to exist, what’s left?

Seriously, I wanted to open a PR to add myself to the list, but the fucker took the repo offline because he couldn’t handle the backlash. Wussy.

I still wonder what it is I said/posted that did it. Was it the Luigi pictures? The guillotine images? Or my relentless disdain for all things Microslop?
