I’m so glad people who know me have started to respond to my “what?” With just nothing.

Because it usually only takes 30 seconds or so to catch my brain up, but if I just wait that 30, I’m being rude…

They could repeat as many times as they want in that span and I won’t get it, and the repetition actually makes it harder to process for me, so them just doing nothing is the perfect ideal. If I repeat my question after letting it process, they know to repeat what they said, but the first one is usually pointless filler to keep from being seen as disengaged, which makes one seem disengaged anyway.

Most conversions with my wife from across the house.

“Baby, you gotta be louder than the TV and running dehumidifier between us.”

At least they used words. My g/f makes dinosaur noises and expects me to fucking interpret what she wants based on a growl.

I’m going to start dressing up like a dog. And you’ll know it’s just a middle aged guy. Standing in a dog costume. Outside your window. For no reason.

You’ll know all of that is true. But I’m still going to stand there. Still going to distract you. And eventually you’re going to come over and question me. That’s when I’m going to jump on top of you, and start licking your face, and humping your leg.

You’ll be disgusted. You’ll try to file a police report. You’ll be insistent that this guy just won’t leave you alone. But everyone else except you will not see a man in a dog costume. They’ll see a dog. They’ll wonder why you’re being an asshole to this friendly dog. Then your girlfriend will be like “What is WRONG with you??? I’m going to bring the dog to my apartment for the night. I don’t think he should be around you right now…”

And that’s when I turn to you, and say “Yeah man. I’m going home with your girl. Gonna sleep in her bed while you’re away. Hump a little leg, if ya know what I’m saying!!! Ha ha ha!”

You’ll point and say “SEE?? DID ANY OF YOU HEAR THAT??? HE’S TRYING TO STEAL YOU FROM ME!!!” and your girl will be like “What’s gotten into you??? I think it may be time for therapy…”

It’s at that moment you look and see a small frog on the grass. And you say “Oh, and I’m sure YOU are going to start singing and dancing now???” to which the frog replies “…what?”

Yeah, my mom has to repeat her self a few times per day, if I only had to be told twice it’s one of the better days of the month

At least I had been prescribed some non stimulant medication to help with my adhd

Sometimes I wish I had the ADHD diagnosis to explain my lack of attention. My SO can’t take it anymore especially given she interprets it as a hit to her worth in my eyes.

Im gonna skip to the end of this story for you. The diagnosis won’t help here. You are gonna have to communicate out of this and a “Aha see I have an ADHD diagnosis so now your feelings are invalid!” Wont get you as far as you think it will.

I don’t know your situation but ultimately my problem was solved by getting another partner who understands me better. I hope you can get her to understand you better

Yeah we are an old couple now (4 kids 13-19) and it’s not perfect but we grew a lot over time. (I used to forget dates on prior relationships) I’m not here for advice or a diagnosis, I’ve always been of the mindset that we can create better habits and improve our lackings. Just sharing and I guess venting a little because it’s harder for me than it is for her. (And probably a lot harder for some of y’all)

I just can’t process words. Other sounds I got it. Learn a song by ear, hear things other people don’t pick up, but words “I’m sorry, repeat?”.

Doesn’t help I have a job with distorted walkies in the cooler/freezer and some coworkers just mumble so I’m just guessing a response and hoping for the best.
