Apple being shit at AI might actually be a blessing. When the bubble pops, they won’t have lost so much, and until then they can get AI companies to pay to be the Siri model (not sure if that’s what they are actually doing though).
I think Apple could do AI as well as everyone else. They just recognized that everyone else is doing it badly because there’s no good way to do it so they backed out.
I think I agree with this. When you look at what apple does, they take their time and wait to make sure the UX is good. Recently, we see it with the iPhone duo where they waited to have a product that looks nice, isn’t too bulky and they reworked the UI to make sure the UX is good. They are not the type to dive head first into the AI slop, it’s not their type. But internally, I’m sure they are experimenting and trying to polish the features for a good UX.
I personnaly dislike Apple for other reasons, but I must give credit where credit is due. It is imo a good philosophy that I could get behind, but in Apple’s case, there are too many red flags.
This is literally Apple’s business model. It’s intentional. They are intentionally focused on slow sustained growth rather than the incredibly volitile BS other tech companies chase. Late to the game? Nobody cares. Something is a flop? They weather it. The butterfly keyboard was a disaster for Apple and it didn’t hurt them at all. They can take the blow if then the occasional flop because their risks are lower and planned out. They let everyone else spin their wheels while they iterate their designs based on what others failed at.
The M-series chips going gangbusters on AI is no coincidence, but at the same time, if the buyer doesn’t care about AI, that unified memory benefits them in other ways anyway. Because they planned out everything.
Which makes the Apple mouse that much more baffling.
The Apple mouse is fine, you leave it on charger when you go into a meeting and you’ll have a few weeks of usage again.
Probably wouldn’t buy one personally, but if you want to use gestures on it, it’s pretty decent.
It’s not the charger, it’s the ergonomics. That thing literally hurts to use.
Apple is not a competitor for anthropic/openai, it’s competitor to nvidia. Latest mac studio is very local AI capable, with 256gb uram and upcoming 512gb, while not terrible inference speed.
They are selling shovels, basically.

We’re basically already at a point where most enterprise documentation is written partly or entirely by AI, and then read mostly by AI. Eventually true understanding of e.g. how to build a docker-compose file will be genuinely rare. And they want to apply that model to everything.
The risk isn’t that GAI will decide, in an Asmovian sense, that the best way to make peace on earth is to kill us all, or that to achieve it’s manufacturing quota it must transmute all matter in the universe I to paperclips. The real risk is that the MBA-wielding professional-managerial class will not be able to resist the siren song of demolishing labor with something that works “well enough.” Eventually they’re going to put it in charge of something critical like ATC or dam control or the electrical grid.
Humans, by our nature, are diverse, and one fuck up rarely cascades through the entire global system. We make small fuck ups and train each other. AI “learns” by observing and probabilistically imitating, and one model could be deployed in a thousand places and screw up the exact same way.

the best way to make sure everything is some flavor of fine is to keep learning new practical skills. I got pretty doomery there. But the other technological trend that can’t really be stopped is decentralization. Communities can, and will continue to be able, to grow their own food and produce their own power. Knowing how to make thst stuff happen is going to be incredibly important in the rest of the 21st century
Something that works well enough? But who will think of the shareholders then? Isn’t it just fabulous for them to increase their 10 billion to 10.2 billion by abolishing all human skill from the surface of Earth.
If they do put it in ATC or dams or whatever, and there are deaths, I am optimistic enough that there are enough politicians isolated from it that they can ban AI from those usecases. I don’t really think AI will ever effect 100% of earths population directly enough that it can’t be controlled

Well I’m European so I’m coming from that perspective. Our politicians, while not perfect by any means, some of them seem to care atleast a little bit about our world. Not every politician supports AI

AI is a tool to do mass layoffs without making your stocks devalue. What happens after all the major companies do mass layoffs? Not a question investors are interested in, so it must be an externality with no barring on economics.
I just don’t think investors see the point of the American consumer market.

No. And with the newer, wider form factor that Samsung started using this generation and clearly Apple is also using, there has been more excitement. The trifold phones have also generated a ton of excitement. That trifold Huawei looks amazing, but us Americans can’t have it. I strongly considered a folding phone for my traveling job. A phone that could fold out tablet size for TV/movies/books sounds great for the plane/hotel.
Apple’s now copying Samsung for development ideas.
