You can find relatively cheap ones online. Damn near kilt em is one I can vouch for as a good first kilt. Or stillwater kilts for something cheap and more traditional looking.

The number one thing to know when buying is that you need to actually measure yourself. Pants lie, kiltmakers generally don’t.

If you want something a little nicer, there are plenty of businesses that make kilts to measure. My last few came from alpha kilts, but I think they quit. Alt.kilt does crazy custom stuff. Utilikilt is probably the most famous one, though I’ve never actually tried theirs.

There’s whole communities online for this stuff. I used to get reviews and find new stores on xmarksthescot.

If you get a contemporary kilt, meaning pockets and modern style, you just need a belt. If you go traditional tartan you probably need a sporran or some other kind of bag or pouch since they don’t have pockets. Traditional kilts also typically use a kilt pin to add weight to the front apron to keep it from blowing around too easily.

Tall socks are good formal wear or cold weather. I am a very casual guy and an arctic creature, so I usually just wear closed toe sandals. But if you live in a cold place and need to stay warm, a full size “9 yard” kilt will do the trick, it creates a pocket of warm air, and the legs being together gives it a mitten effect.

You can go commando (aka going regimental, because in highland regiments underwear is considered out of uniform), but I don’t recommend it. For one thing, you don’t know fear until you’ve been caught in a gust of 50 mph wind while walking past a school playground on a day that you decided to save time by forgoing underwear, and now you are desperately holding down all sides of a lightweight kilt and trying not to end up on sex offender registry. But on a much more mundane level, it’s also just a lot easier to keep your kilt clean when it isn’t directly touching your junk or your crack. I wear briefs but I go up a couple sizes, so that the elastic still holds them up but they hang off me when I’m standing, which feels like I’m wearing nothing at all.

Of course, if anyone asks what’s worn under the kilt, you have lots of options:

        • Nothing’s worn, it’s all in excellent condition.
        • If you want to find out it will cost you dinner and a movie first.
        • Shoes
        • On a good day, lipstick

I joked before, but your excellent answer made me seriously consider buying a kilt. I need to find out how the supply situation is here in Germany. Or I’ll ask the seamstress that made my ex wife’s wedding dress, she’s working for the theater in my city as well. Maybe she’d like a challenge.

          Thank you 💖

Amazon sells good quality ones. I just got one through their “try then buy” program.

Or, use Amazon to find good brands and buy directly from them.

Remember, go up 2-4 inches from your pants size when buying a kilt. So, if you wear a size 32 pants, get a size 36 kilt. Their waist measurements are actually your waist measurement.

Also, the patterns have specific meanings. No one in the US is going to care, but if you go to Scotland someone may address you by the last name the pattern represents (they’re like family crests). There are generic patterns out there, though.

I wear a kilt every single day. I love them. I don’t even own pants anymore. I’m almost 50 and my "give a fuck what other people think"is used up.

I really want to wear kilts, but decent ones are really expensive and I don’t want to spend that money on something I might not like (or more specifically I might not like bad attention from, because I do sadly care about that).

Everyone has different experiences, but this post pretty much perfectly shows how people act where i live. There arent really any types of clothes that women aren’t “supposed” to wear, but men get a lot of weird looks if they wear skirts, frills or anything not seen as “masculine”

My husband pointed out that certain items like sneakers, backpacks and scrubs are either unisex or women’s. Many other items are that way, too. A men’s watch might be large on a woman’s wrist but no-one would really think twice. A tiny pink watch on a man’s wrist would likely garner more attention (depending on where you are in the western world, of course)

Honestly I think the pink would draw more attention than the size of the watch in that example. Most people aren’t paying close enough attention to others’ wristwear to notice size.

I think there are certain traditionally “masculine” things that would draw more attention than others if a woman wore them, but I’m struggling to think of any that would cause actual upset. You still hear the occasional grumble about women in business suits from time to time, to spite women’s cut suits having been a thing for decades, but that’s mostly well accepted now.

Tuxedo, maybe? They cut them for women too, but that one feels like it’s mostly still in the male category because its opposite is often expected in certain formal settings. A women showing up to something formal in a tux and not a dress would probably still do it today, depending on the event and the people in attendance.

Like imagine a ball or some other bougie shit where a husband and wife both show up in tuxes.

I think certain styles of hats are still exclusive to men mostly. I think that’s more because wearing hats went out of fashion rather than it being an issue though. I’m sure if people started wearing hats more often, those styles would be worn by either gender, but women’s hats would probably still exclusively be women’s.

Bro I see girls with short hair wearing boots all the time and nobody bats an eye. The second a dude in a dress walks by everyone stares and whispers. There’s worse things that can happen to a guy in a dress than weird looks too, and I’d wager they’re more likely to happen.

I don’t know about butches but women wearing male clothing is just an everyday thing where I live. So much so that a lot of male clothes are just unisex clothes. Not so for women’s clothing

They became “unisex” (often still labeled men’s clothes and on men’s section of the store) because so many women used them.

It’s unisex because of how common it was and still is. Meaning there’s no issue about it since there basically isn’t male clothing anymore.

I guess what I’m wondering about is what sort of clothes these butches are wearing to cause issues?

Ah yes because butches and the like are famously accepted by their family and peers and never subjected to sexual harassment that tries to “fix” them

… That’s not what the meme is about. The meme is about being aggressively in your face about your fashion choice lol.

Yeah, I’m using Boost too, and that’s the one PR I want merged, but I’m not a coder so I don’t know how hard it is to implement. The only other app I’ve used is Jerboa, so I know that the coding is there (I believe they’re called APIs) but I don’t know how I could personally help with this issue.

I’m not too sure about navigating that specific app, but on desktop you can just follow a link like this one: https://lemmy.world/c/egg_irl@lemmy.blahaj.zone and you’ll view the blahaj instance from the cozy view of your lemmy.world account. You can subscribe there and it should appear in your feeds.

Alternatively, if you’re super into queer spaces you could just create an account on blahaj to make that like your “home” instance but that wont really affect your Lemmy viewing experience much. it’s akin to creating a yahoo email vs google email: you can still send and receive all the same stuff but you just log in somewhere else

I wouldn’t suggest using blahaj as a home instance. It’s one of the instances that pussyfoots around with defederating from hexbear, and I think it disables downvotes, which just means the content isn’t voted on democratically, which fucks up the aggregation and doesn’t give you an accurate view of Lemmy as a whole.

Cool communities there, poor admins. Stick with lemmy.world or pick a different home.

🎶To be fair🎶 .world isn’t without it’s own problems, mostly getting DDOS’d all the time, so if you’re gonna look for an instance, I’d try to pick a lesser-known one than .world or the other big ones. Probably being a hypocrite here, since mine is arguably the biggest meme community on Lemmy right now, but I think that’ll change given time.

A lot of rock stars dress very feminine and have great success with that style. Glam rock? Another guy dressing feminine but having success with it is ziggy stardust.

Also a lot of recent rap artists that are popular with female fans dress feminine

the above image is lil uzi vert the image below is a hardcore gangster rap star called young thug Youngthug cultivates a hypermasculine image but dresses like this

this guy is a straight guy who raps and is alleged to have beein involved in homicides and part of a gang of hardened criminals. just he also has a unique sense of fashion.

there is also gay rappers like lil nas x but i omit him here as I show how far what is acceptable has come.

    Hiphop is embracing feminine fashion
