Three episodes into “Secret Invasion,” I have to admit I’m prett underwhelmed. By all rights, this series should feel like a spiritual successor to The Winter Soldier, but it’s falling flat for me on nearly every level.

The cast is doing a great job, Ben Mendelsohn in particular, but they’re being let down by the material.

Also, the die-hard “Agents of SHIELD” fan in me is just waiting for Director Mackenzie to show up and save the day.

I’m reserving judgement on the total story just yet but some of it is definitely a bit aha we retconned this for the sake of it.

I definitely agree tho the acting has been top notch so far.

I was actually inspired by this show to revisit “Captain Marvel” (alas, I was still unimpressed by it), and I’d totally forgotten that the film ended with Carol taking the Skrulls to find a new home. It’s pretty jarring to realize that that failed pretty much immediately, and Carol…I guess just noped out of the whole affair?

Yeah it’s very sad that suddenly it just all got retconned for the sake of it, at least they could have explained it away as they tried to find places and it turned into a warzone type situation and they had to come back to earth where it’s safe.

To be honest Captain Marvel as a character is someone they shouldn’t have added to the mcu because any story she is apart of and she doesn’t solve makes no sense.

She’s basically Superman of the MCU how can she not find them a home and make them safe?

I think if they really wanted to make her a thing they shouldn’t have done it as a prequel, prequels never end up well.

I think the explanation of “we couldn’t find anyone who would accept us” that they tossed off works well enough on its own…it just raises the question of what the heck Carol thinks of all this, since she was pretty invested in the endeavour.

“Captain Marvel” as a film is a weird one. To me, it has all the components of an entertaining film, but manages to be kind of dull an uninspiring. I feel like the exact same script and actors in the hands of a different director could have been pretty good, if not great. The sequel already looks far more charming.

Yeah Captain Marvel as a film just felt so flat.

All the nostalgia beats didn’t stick and Brie Larson while probably a very good actor just felt like her humour didn’t land because the way they wrote the character doesn’t seem to fit with her as a person or the way she portrayed the character.

I don’t think it was just a better director needed I feel like Brie was miscast in the role at least if they wanted to write her in the way they did but that’s my opinion on it.

I do appreciate the reveal about fury’s competency though.

If you’re referring to the way Fury was able to rise through the ranks at SHIELD (and forgive me if you aren’t), I have mixed feelings about that one. The way Talos presented it made it sound like Fury was somehow unworthy, or that he hadn’t really earned it, which is not an interpretation I can really get behind. However, the same scenario could be spun to highlight Fury’s guile and ability to use the resources available to him, so I guess it’s in the eye of the beholder.

I’m also left trying to ignore the question of how an army of Skrulls failed to detect several decades’ worth of Hydra double agents…

As another committed Agents of SHIELD fan, I’be been hesitating on starting this one, or at least waiting until I can binge.

It’s been getting moderate reviews from others in the household, so the underwhelming reports here are not making me want to move it up to watch-on-release status.

On the other hand, I found She-Hulk and Loki my favourite new Marvel offerings in the past couple of years.

Yeah, I wouldn’t say you have to rush to watch this one. It’s fine.

    Having now seen episode 4...

It was nice to get some action again - I know it’s unrealistic to have a big setpiece like this every week, but it was sorely needed.

The “Rhodey is a Skrull” reveal was pretty unsurprising, and they probably could have ripped that Band-Aid off last week.

The (apparent) death of Talos seemed somewhat inevitable, and was well-executed, but if he is in fact gone, I’m not sure it’s worth losing Mendelsohn.

I found the episode pretty enjoyable, but still don’t feel like the series has much momentum - it’s strange.
