Maybe Starfleet should incorporate something like this, but for people who transfer divisions at some point.
Yeah, Geordi is a stellar engineer but he’s also one of the best pilots on the D. So his primary uniform is Gold, but maybe his shoulder is Red.
Or someone like Janeway, yes a captain so she’s Command Division Red, but since she was (probably?) in science for a while her shoulder would be Blue.
I think Army does something similar where they’d show your current unit assignment on one sleeve, but on your right sleeve you’re allowed to wear any unit insignia in which you served in combat. If anyone can confirm or debunk this please do.
