It’s set in the time before Serenity, so both Wash and Book are still alive. No need to come up with story contortions. Just re-cast for Ron Glass.

Also, animated means they can keep doing more for a long time without having to explain the actors aging and why they can’t do crazy stunts or ride horses.

    Win, win.

… As long as it includes YoSafBridge.

Mkay - are we retconning Wash’s demise, or will this be set well enough before that? Because I’m not sure I can commit without him.

EDIT: According to Deadline, it’s set between the series and the movie in timeline. As I recall, that only gives about six months of in-universe time - I hope they can make the most of it.

Since Joss is said not to be involved, maybe they will retcon it. I kinda hope so - even though the movie was mostly good, I think that was a bad mistake made purely for shock value.

If I were in charge I would pretend Wash never dies. Go right past the movie time period and cover Reaver reveal from a different angle. The movie becomes beta canon and everyone winks at each other when they talk about the death of Wash.

Since this universe has no magic of time travel to magic the problem away I think it’s best to just wink and nod.

I mean, not purely shock value; it ties directly to the philosophical ideas present both throughout the movie and in the last (unaired) episode.

That said…I wouldn’t cry any tears if it were retconnned.

    Shiny.

I’ve always thought an animated series would be the perfect way to continue it, amazing to see it finally happening.

Yeah, it’s really the only way they could have done it at this point. I’m hoping the creators/writers do it justice; I heard that Joss Whedon won’t be involved. Say what you will about the man, but he wrote damn compelling characters.

And the dialogue. If there’s a line you really love from a Whedon show, chances are high he wrote it himself.

Also the concept art looks great! It’ll be animated by the studio that did Bojack Horseman (though they’re probably more known for their stop-motion animation on Adult Swim like Robot Chicken)

My wife, who is super into and out of Firefly fandom is both happy and sad. I don’t know how to feel.

I got into it because of her. She hasn’t revealed how she feels. Think she’s still processing it. I made sure not to say anything until somebody was official because I didn’t want to give her an emotional roller coaster

I think that’s probably how many feel. Happy that there is something that is new firefly, but sad that it’s not live action. Hopefully the one thing will lead to more of the other though, if successful

I think it makes sense, everyone looks visibly older so retroactively putting it before Serenity would be tricky from a marketing perspective, that’s why I always wanted them to full cast the audio books, they all still sound great.

That is fair, I’m curious how they’ll handle that, if they just recast, or have him be off at an abbey or something, if I remember right, don’t they pick Book up from where at the start of Serenity anyway?

The cartoon is supposed to be set in the time between the show and the movie. I’m pretty sure that the plan is to recast.

I dunno how you’d go about it but putting further distance from the Confederacy metaphor would also be good.

But I’m just glad there’ll be more, honestly.

Please give it to the same studio that did Lower Decks! They nailed the lore and the humor.

Also they’d better get a different actor to voice Jayne

It’s looking like it’d be ShadowMachine; they did Robot Chicken, Bojack Horseman, and a bunch of other stuff.

Ugh! Didn’t know. Yeah, that’s a move I could get behind in light of that. Unfortunately, according to the Deadline article he’s already committed to “lending his voice” even though he wasn’t physically there for the announcement.

Maybe we’ll get lucky and his fellow cast members will help him get back to reality a bit - especially considering it’s slowly becoming harder to be anything but the most diehard of a Trump supporter.

This was a good choice I think, both because the actors are much older and it allows for some more wacky funny visuals.
